NEWHART: ANIMAL ATTRACTIONS (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedies about Dick and Joanna Loudon, who run a country inn in Vermont.

In this episode, Stephanie is appalled when she catches a pair of guests, the Putnams, attempting to sneak out in the middle of the night without paying for their room. George befriends a dog, though Kirk makes his dislike plain; everyone teases Dick for having a fluffy "Snowball" angora cat, rather than a dog, as a childhood pet. The Putnams make a second bid for freedom as George places an ad in the newspaper regarding the lost dog. Stephanie is flustered when her erstwhile husband Carl telephones and requests to see her. She admits to Dick and Joanna that she never quite explained her reasons for abandoning their two-day marriage. Though she considers fleeing once again to avoid a confrontation, she decides that the sudden rain is "a sign" and anxiously prepares to see him.

Lou Ward and his young son Ted come to retrieve the dog, but Lou realizes that it is not his son's beloved "Scruffy" at all. Ted seems content to take his new friend home all the same. Joanna, Dick and Kirk are taken aback to meet Carl, who is several decades older than Stephanie; she finally confesses that their significant age difference was a primary factor in her sudden departure. Carl, though saddened, admits that he did not expect their odd romance to last, and they part on good terms as Stephanie fondly recalls their pleasant times together. Later, George is pleased to find that he can keep the dog, whom he christens "Lucky." Stephanie decides that she is glad to have closure with her ex. Dick watches as the Putnams "check out" via the window, and Kirk and Lucky's "feud" reaches something of a crescendo. Commercials deleted.
