MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, THE: A GIRL LIKE MARY (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about Mary Richards, a single career woman working in a television newsroom.

In this episode, Lou declares that their news program has become "pretty static" and that he has decided to introduce a segment called "women's point of view" to liven things up. He describes the ideal anchor as being remarkably similar to Mary – without actually being Mary. However, Georgette tells Mary that while she is interested in the position herself, she does not wish to audition and feels that Mary should step up instead. Mary steels her nerves and tells Lou that she may just be the person for the job. Lou tells her that he did not want to have to hurt her feelings by informing her that she "stinks."

Undaunted, Mary rehearses for the audition, and Sue Ann announces that she too intends to put herself in the running, as she is tired of her sunny role on "The Happy Homemaker." When Mary admits that they will be competitors, Sue Ann points out the "dubious ethics" of her trying out for a show that she herself will help to produce; Mary swears that she will have no influence on the decision. During the auditions, Sue Ann finds that she cannot turn off her sugar-sweet disposition even when covering tragic news; Mary finds herself overcome with nerves despite Ted's "advice" about playing to the camera. Lou ultimately chooses another woman, Enid Berringer. When Mary asks, he shows her Enid's confident audition and asks her to make the seemingly obvious decision, though this backfires when Mary selects herself. Mary soon realizes that Enid has already been hired, and Lou admits that Mary was not even close to the first choice. Wanting to seem gracious, Mary assures Enid that she is a "behind-the-scenes" person anyway, and the new colleagues head out for drinks. Commercials deleted.
