SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE {ELLIOT GOULD; KID CREOLE AND THE COCONUTS} {SIXTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of live, late-night comedy/variety programs featuring topical satire. Actor Elliot Gould hosts this program, with musical guest Kid Creole & the Coconuts. In the opening sequence, Gould parodies his 1969 film "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice" as he wakes up in bed with a number of cast members and then answers their questions about the wild days of early "SNL." During his opening monologue, Gould reflects upon hosting the show's sixth season premiere and decides to do a "meaningful" introduction. He presents a series of pairs of his underwear from memorable moments in his life, and cast member Denny Dillon joins him onstage looking to trade for other noteworthy underthings.
Sketches include the following: a commercial for a new program encouraging citizens to read classic works while driving; newly "free" President Jimmy Carter, who mopes over losing the election before his family encourages him to indulge in some not-so-wholesome thoughts; a birthday "Billy-gram" for a young woman living in sin with her boyfriend from her strict parents; a censored message on self-examination methods for breast cancer; an installment of "What's It All About?" with busybodies Pinky and Leo Waxman, more interested in hearing about Gould's ex-wife Barbra Streisand than about his new picture "The Last Flight of Noah's Ark"; and "Weekend Update," with Charles Rocket discussing President-elect Reagan's new economic and educational plans, a misunderstanding with Independent candidate John B. Anderson, who believes himself to have been elected, Cary Grant's lawsuit against Chevy Chase; Prince Charles of Wales' plans to marry Diana Spencer; developments with NASA and the rings of Saturn; the "Rocket Report," in which he interrogates passersby at The Dakota, hoping for information on the rumor of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's new album, a claim that Reagan is in fact already dead and fooling the nation, and the effect of inflation on prostitution.
Other highlights include the following: an installment of "At One With…" discussing the recent inclusion of homosexuals in the military, with one soldier demonstrating his strict training; "Heart-to-Heart," in which a man laments that "something" has changed with his wife; a "nose-wrestling" competition; a middle-aged man's awkward date with a much younger, ditzy woman; a crime story concerning "the Accordion Killer" and the cops' plan to trap him using a decoy and bagpipe players; and a lesson on "speed-listening," in which one can listen to classical and modern music in less time than ever before. Two "Short Shots" by famous directors are shown: "Foot Fetish" by Randal Kleiser and "Gidgette Goes to Hell" by Jonathan Demme. Kid Creole & the Coconuts also perform "Mister Softee" and "There But By the Grace of God Go I." Includes commercials.
