MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO, THE: AN AFTERNOON WITH NICK JR. {STORYTELLING WITH BLUE'S CLUES, LITTLE BILL AND OSWALD} (TV) {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of seminars presented by The Paley Center for Media in New York (known at the time as The Museum of Television & Radio). This seminar celebrates several children's programs from the Nick Jr. network, including "Little Bill," based on books by Bill Cosby and featuring events and adventures from the life of a boy named Little Bill, "Oswald," about a blue octopus and his adventures with his friends in Big City, and "Blue's Clues," the interactive problem-solving series starring a dog named Blue. The host offers opening remarks and then introduces a clip from "Little Bill," in which Cosby and Bill read a book together. In an excerpt from the episode "Ready, Set, Read," Alice the Great encourages Bill to improve his reading skills at school by asking his teacher for help. Ruby Dee, the voice of Alice the Great, then takes the stage to read one of the Little Bill books, "An Adventure With Captain Brainstorm" by Fracaswell Hyman, telling the story of Bill's adventures in outer space, where he befriends an alien.

Next, a clip from "Oswald" teaches young viewers how to do the "Penguin Polka," and creator/"thinker-upper" Dan Yaccarino takes the stage to read Oswald's self-titled book aloud, also creating illustrations on large sheets of paper as he reads the story of how Oswald made friends with a number of neighbors by hosting a piano party.

After this, a clip is shown from the "Blue's Clues" episode entitled "Words" in which Blue and host Steve learn about the power of words like "tame," "miniscule" and "swiftly" as they take a wagon ride and end up at a party. Executive producers/creators/writers Traci Paige Johnson and Angela Santomero then take the stage to create a "button book," using oversized buttons and drawing around them on large sheets of paper to create images of cars, suns, and pigs, among other things, to create an adventure story for Blue. Children from the audience come up to assist in creating the tale, and Johnson, who also provides the dog's voice, teaches the kids how to "talk" like Blue. The host then closes the afternoon by announcing the winners of the day's prize raffle.
