CHEERS: PLEASE MR. POSTMAN (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about a group of regulars at a Boston bar.

Cliff is assigned to train a new postal worker, and asks to meet the new employee at Cheers. He is unhappy at this task, believing that “rookies” are obstructive. The trainee, Margaret O’Keefe, arrives, and initially Cliff makes remarks claiming that women do not belong in the postal service. However, his attitude changes when Margaret speaks highly of him, praising him as “the best in the business” and explaining that she requested him personally to be her trainer. Cliff is impressed by her dedication and attitude, and he feels that she is attracted to him. Sam continues his pursuit of Rebecca and attempts to discover what her fetish is. She informs him that she is turned on by a particular song, although she does not specify which one. He tries to determine the song she means, but cannot seem to figure it out. Margaret gets trained by Cliff, and the two of them become closer over time. The two of them engage in a budding romance, and they arrange a date, although Cliff is visibly awkward about the situation.

They meet at a hotel the following night, and continue to act awkwardly towards each other. Just as they are becoming intimate, they are interrupted by the arrival of a police officer questioning the motel guests about a stolen postal vehicle parked outside. Cliff says he knows nothing about it, and after the officer leaves he confronts Margaret about it. She says she was running late and so drove her mail truck to the motel, making Cliff furious. He warns that she will be fired for her actions, but she convinces him to make up an alibi to protect her. Sam calls Rebecca’s mother and discovers that the song in question is “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’.” Cliff and Margaret return from a hearing at the postal office, where Margaret was exonerated for her misdoings; he claims that the truck was hijacked by thieves and then taken for a joyride. However, Margaret feels guilty about what they did and feels as though she has besmirched her profession. She feels that she has “corrupted” Cliff, robbing him of the strong moral values which attracted her to him. Margaret recommends that they tell the truth, feeling that it will clear her conscience and that the punishment they will suffer will be minimal.

Sam attempts to use the song he discovered to seduce Rebecca, but she resists until Sam leaves the room, whereupon her emotions get the better of her and she ends up accidentally kissing Norm. Margaret ends up getting fired, and Cliff suffers a steep penalty. Margaret comes to see him and says she is contemplating going to work for the Canadian Postal Service, and asks him to come with her. He agrees and says goodbye to everyone, although Sam and Frasier try to get him to reconsider rushing into a marriage with Margaret. They manage to convince him to stay, and he and Margaret share a dramatic farewell. Commercials deleted.
