ABC PREMIERE EVENT: STEPHEN KING'S ROSE RED {PART 2 OF 3} (TV)
Summary
Part two of three in this miniseries from Stephen King about a group of psychics investigating a haunted mansion.
Joyce and her party approach Rose Red, and Pam picks up psychic impressions of Kevin's visit to the house. As they gather up equipment, Annie brings up the rear and sets off a phantom draft. Joyce leads the others around the house as they observe its otherworldly trappings. In the solarium, Steve finds Kevin's discarded cell phone and hits redial, reaching Carl's answering machine. He leaves a message on the phone for Carl, stating that they now know that he sent Kevin to Rose Red. The others believe that Kevin may have been scared off, but Joyce is unwilling to call the police, as she does not wish to let Carl "win." Joyce then tells the others that April Rimbauer went missing in the house's kitchen when she was six years old. John believed that Sukeena was somehow responsible, and she was subjected to a brutal police interrogation for many hours before being released.
The group heads upstairs into a hallway with camouflaged doors. Upon opening one of them, they are faced by a rush of wind and screaming noises, which appear to be calmed by Annie. Joyce explains that Ellen Rimbauer held a party every January 15 on the anniversary of her arrival at Rose Red, and that on that date in 1950 she disappeared in the hallway at age 70. Next they enter the "Mirror Library," a massive circular study with a mirrored floor. Inside they find Kevin's camera and encounter a glowing apparition who beckons to Annie. She reaches out to touch the figure but it disappears when Cathy sets off the flash on Kevin's camera. They try to retrace their steps and head back downstairs, but find that the layout of the house has somehow changed, impeding their progress. Annie, with some encouragement from Nick, uses her powers to somehow reshape the structure of the house, allowing them to move forward.
After making their way through a room designed to make the occupants believe that they are walking on the ceiling, the party makes its way to the billiards room to break for lunch. Joyce tells them about Deanna Petrie, an actress and friend of Ellen who was a regular guest in Rose Red. She disappeared into the house in 1946, leaving only one of her earrings behind. Annie discovers a secret wall panel hiding a miniature model of Rose Red, and is fascinated by it. That night, Joyce sets up recording equipment and orders pizza for the group. Annie gets an old record player to work and the group holds an impromptu dance, unaware that there are spirits moving throughout the house. Afterwards, Joyce tells the group about John Rimbauer's gay business partner, who hanged himself in front of April and Adam in 1915 after his exit from John's oil company. Steve reveals that he last visited Rose Red with his mother when he was eight years old. Her goal was to steal antiques to get her out of debt, and Steve got lost inside the house. Nick senses that there is something Steve will not reveal to them. Before they can continue the house starts to shake and light fixtures explode around them. When it calms down, Annie finds a doll in a baby stroller similar to a doll she carries around with her, and takes a liking to it. The glowing apparition from earlier reappears, but Steve drives it away before Annie can make contact with it.
During the night, the group is plagued by nightmares and strange occurrences. Emery is frightened by a spindly zombie-like apparition whom he believes is Deanna Petrie. Pam has a nightmare and is led away by what appears to be Cathy, claiming she has made an important discovery. She is led to a pond on the Red Rose property surrounded by a statue garden. The real Cathy is nearly attacked by something moving under the carpet, but she emerges unharmed. Annie is approached by the ghost of April Rimbauer, who sings to her. Rachel awakens before anything can happen to Annie, and they return to sleep unaware that they are still being watched. In the morning Emery's call to his mother fails to go through, and he is terrified that she will come to the house. Sure enough, Kay starts driving to Rose Red when she can't get through to him. Steve learns from Nick that Joyce's equipment didn't gather any usable data the previous night, frustrating her. They discover the house's wine cellar and hear the ghostly sounds of construction crews around them. Nick helps himself to a bottle of champagne as he remarks that both Annie and Steve appear to be "waking" the house, and that Steve is a "powerful psychic transmitter." Steve calls Carl again and leaves a message regarding Kevin's questionable safety. However, Carl gets a different message, stating that Kevin has committed suicide and that Carl should come to the house immediately.
Steve finds Annie playing with dominoes and has a brief conversation with her. Annie also causes the flowers in the solarium to play music. Rachel arrives and remarks that Annie is being unusually talkative. She believes that the dead flowers blooming again are Annie's doing, and tells Steve about the incident in Annie's youth when she was bitten by their neighbor's dog. She also recounts how Annie froze the water in their home as a "protest" after hearing Rachel arguing with their father. Annie sees Vic in the kitchen as he hallucinates that he is speaking with Pam, who leads him away to the statue garden. Meanwhile, Kay and Carl arrive at the house at the same time and breach the front gate; Kay drives in first. She sees what she believes is Emery and causes a car accident with Carl as she runs into the woods surrounding the house to find her son. Carl quickly follows.
Emery hears his mother calling for him and panics, then assumes that it is a figment of his imagination. Joyce goes around the house with special detection equipment and starts to get some readings which please her. Vic finds what appears to be Pam's corpse floating in the pond, but it disappears except for her nightgown. Vic feels the start of a heart attack and is frightened away when one of the statues comes to life, removes its own face, and opens a pair of human-looking eyes at him. Kay finds a hooded figure that she believes to be Emery, but is knocked down and dragged away. Vic makes his way back to the house and pleads for help from Emery through a locked window; Emery ignores his cries for help out of fright. Nick then comes in and sees that Vic has collapsed and is possibly dead. He's frustrated by not being able to open the window and get to Vic. Carl encounters the ghost of Sukeena, who tells him that Kevin is waiting for him. She leads him to a large tree and he screams as gale force winds attack him. Meanwhile, the house's spirits continue to gather strength from their latest "victims." Includes commercials.
