CHEERS: DO NOT FORSAKE ME, O' MY POSTMAN (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about a group of regulars at a Boston bar.
Cliff learns that his old girlfriend Maggie is back in town after six months, much to his excitement. Rebecca tries to get Sam to put out more advertisements for Cheers, and they agree to her suggestion of a radio ad accompanied by a catchy jingle. Rebecca visits a PR firm in order to start the ad campaign, and secures the services of a cantankerous old jingle composer, Sy Flembeck. She brings Sy to Cheers to help him compose something which captures the atmosphere of the bar. Maggie arrives at Cheers to see Cliff, revealing that she is pregnant with his child. Cliff is beside himself with shock, and Frasier recommends that Maggie leave to give Cliff enough time to compose himself. Cliff emerges, having calmed down somewhat, and Sam and the others see this event as a cause for celebration. Cliff asks Sam to speak in private in his office, and confesses that he does not think the baby is his, explaining that he never actually had sex with Maggie. He believes that Maggie got pregnant with someone else and now wants to entrap Cliff into marriage. He doesn’t wish to get married, but also wants to save face in front of everyone else, although Sam points out that they don’t need to know about this personal issue. He tries to follow Sam’s advice, but Carla immediately realizes that Maggie’s child is not his.
Rebecca is displeased with Sy’s uncreative composition for the Cheers jingle, and tells him to get out. However, once he leaves Rebecca overhears a conversation revealing that Sy’s jingles, however annoying and banal, are infectiously memorable. She leaves to try and retrieve him. Maggie returns later on and Cliff talks to her in private, and Maggie tearfully admits that the baby isn’t Cliff’s, and that she didn’t know where else to turn. She explains that she fell in love with a man while she was away in Canada and that they were to be married, but then he got scared and called it off, leaving her quite desperate. Cliff agrees to marry her, much to her surprise; he admits that he feels he would be happy in a marriage with her even despite the circumstances. Cliff tells the bar about his decision while Maggie calls the father of her child to let him know. Cliff’s excitement is cut short when Maggie emerges and tells him that the father wants her back, releasing Cliff from his obligation. He claims that he is happy for her and agrees to drive her to bus stop. Before they leave, Maggie reveals that she and Cliff did have sex after all, but he was highly inebriated and does not remember the occasion. Commercials deleted.
