SHUIHU ZHUAN: LIN CHONG LUO CAO {OUTLAWS IN THE
MARSH: LIN CHONG BECOMES AN OUTLAW} {PART 8}
{MANDARIN CHINESE} (TV)
Summary
The second of two programs on this tape. Part eight of
forty-three in this television adaptation of the classic
Chinese novel, "Outlaws in the Marsh," written by Shi
Naian in the late-1300s. This adaptation closely follows
the novel, which tells the story of how a group known as
the 108 Outlaws from Shuihu come together and rebel
against the Song Dynasty (AD 960-1279).
Part eight continues to focus on Lin Chong, who is to
become one of the 108 Outlaws later in the series, and
introduces another major character named Yang Zhi, who
is also to become one of the 108 Outlaws later in the
series.
Part eight begins with Gao Yanei hearing the news that
Lin Chong’s wife has committed suicide. Then one of his
close bodyguards tells him even worse news that Lu Qian
and other bodyguards have all been killed by Lin Chong
in Cangzhou. Meanwhile his father Gao Qiu is
accompanying Emperor Huizong on state affairs. The
emperor plays soccer with him afterwards and lets him
go home when Gao Qiu doesn’t feel well. Once Gao Qiu
arrives home and hears the news that Lin Chong is still
not dead, he immediately orders the arrest of Lin Chong.
Seeing that Lin Chong’s wife is dead and the resultant
mental illness of her father, the street punks, who
originally befriended Lu Da and then Lin Chong, decide
to take revenge on Gao Yanei. A few days later, in a
street market, they lure Gao Yanei into an empty house
and cut off his penis. Afterwards, Gao Qiu becomes even
more angry and issues more orders to capture Lin Chong.
When the arrest orders reach Cangzhou, where Lin Chong
is temporarily staying in the household of Chai Jin
after he fled the prison work camp in part seven, they
decide it is safer for Lin Chong to join a gang of
outlaws occupying the Liangshan Lake in the Shuihu area.
Thus a few days later, Lin Chong leaves Cangzhou to go
to Shuihu to join the outlaws, with recommendation
letters written by Chai Jin since he has always been on
good terms with the outlaw leaders. Yet when Lin Chong
arrives in Shuihu, the First Chair (first leader) named
Wang Lun doesn’t want Lin Chong to join them since he is
afraid of Lin Chong's great martial skills and think he
will eventually threaten his position. Fortunately for
Lin Chong, the next three Chairs want him to join and
pressure Wang Lun to accept Lin Chong. After a few days,
Wang Lun finally agrees to let Lin Chong to join them if
Lin Chong will kill someone and bring his/her head to
them as an initiation ritual within the next three days.
Lin Chong has great hesitations about killing anyone for
no good reason and doesn’t accomplish his goal in the
next three days, but on the last day, he comes across
and manages to win a fight over another great martial
arts fighter named Yang Zhi and captures a big treasure
chest that Yang Zhi was employed to transport to
Dongjing (Eastern Capitol). When Lin Chong presents the
treasures to Wang Lun, Wang Lun finally accepts Lin
Chong as the gang’s Fourth Chair. Wang Lun also tries to
persuade Yang Zhi to join his gang, but Yang Zhi flatly
refuses, and part eight ends with Yang Zhi continuing on
his journey to Dongjing.
