CHEERS: CLIFF'S ROCKY MOMENT (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about a group of regulars at a Boston bar. In this episode, Coach makes a very unique cocktail as a bar patron, Victor, grows annoyed with Cliff's know-it-all chatter and criticizes him rudely. The employees then fill out their guesses for the football pool, and Sam is annoyed to admit that Diane, who knows nothing about the sport and uses very non-traditional criteria to make her selections, has been winning the competition lately. Carla encourages Cliff to stand up to Victor, sure that he will back down before it comes to actual "fisticuffs," but Victor stands his ground and Cliff ends up running away from the fight. Later, Diane wins the pool again, causing Sam to lament that she is "destroying the sport of football." Cliff returns to the bar with "the muscle": Lewis, a strapping fellow postman. Victor is immediately intimidated by the larger man, though when he explains that he is annoyed by Cliff's endless pontificating, Lewis realizes that he has a good point and leaves.
Cliff warns Victor that he is secretly a black belt in karate, though everyone – apart from Diane, who approves of his refusal to fight – laughs off this claim. Victor orders Cliff to admit that he is "a coward and a liar" or leave Cheers for good, and everyone is dismayed when Cliff dejectedly walks out. He soon returns, however, with some props borrowed from a construction site, and proceeds to "prove" that he is indeed a karate master. Everyone is suitably impressed, though Cliff privately confesses his rather painful bluff to Diane. Commercials deleted.
