NYPD BLUE: HO DOWN {TENTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The tenth-season premiere in this series of rough-edged police dramas about the cases and private lives of the detectives and station house personnel of a Manhattan precinct. In this episode, while attempting to arrest a man named Lyle for shooting a drug dealer, Little Pete, a cranky Sipowicz gets into an altercation with the man's neighbors, including a woman named Shalice. When they question Lyle, he brazenly threatens Sipowicz, saying that Shalice's boyfriend is a powerful criminal known as Money T who will come after the cops for their treatment of her. At the same time, Detective Winslow questions Clark about the death of a prostitute, Cynthia Patterson, as his name was in her appointment book, and Clark claims that she was an unregistered confidential informant and nothing more. As Jones works a case in which an elderly woman was beaten in her home, Clark tells Rodriguez about Lyle's threat against Sipowicz, and the lieutenant tells Sipowicz to "sit tight" until Narcotics catches Money T. IAB Sergeant Martens interrogates Clark again, demanding details about his meetings with Patterson, implying that Clark is a suspect in her death. Clark denies everything, but then meets with his father, who shares his name, and learns that Clark Sr. had a relationship with her, though was not involved in her death, and he resolves to take the heat for his dad.

When Clark returns, Ortiz asks him about the Patterson case, suspecting him of lying when he claims ignorance. Learning that Money T is connected to many murders and is nearly impossible to catch, Sipowicz and Clark trick Lyle by pretending to prepare for a line-up and telling him they want the "bigger fish" rather than him, and he reluctantly gives them information about Money T's whereabouts. Jones hauls in a teenager found using the beaten old woman's credit card, and he claims that "Joe from algebra class" gave it to him. Clark and Sipowicz burst into the apartment named by Lyle and arrest several men, but Money T is not there. Clark then confesses the truth about his father to Sipowicz, who gives him advice. Suddenly, shots are fired at the police and a bystander is killed. Sipowicz, enraged and believing that Money T is behind it, heads off to rough up Lyle, nearly getting into a scuffle with Clark when he tries to stop him. He threatens Lyle, saying that Money will surely kill him as soon as he is released, and Lyle finally gives up Money's true location in exchange for Witness Protection. Jones finds the elusive Joe, who claims innocence and says that he is new in town and was delivering a woman's lost mail at the time of the crime.

McDowell and Ortiz pose as prostitutes to get close to Money's establishment, and the cops are able to enter and arrest the criminals, finding a huge stash of drugs and money as well. Later, the Feds take over Money's case. When Jones and Medavoy go to the second old woman's apartment, they find her beaten as well, and Jones angrily confronts Joe again, who eventually admits that he is full of rage about being constantly moved around by his disinterested parents and finally took out his anger on the women. Ortiz goes to Clark's apartment at night and he tells her the truth about covering for his father, believing his lesser punishment for not registering Patterson as a C.I. will be worth it, but Ortiz disagrees and they argue. McDowell goes to Sipowicz's home and states that she wants to stay overnight for once, and when Sipowicz tentatively explains the situation to Theo, he seems perfectly fine with it and a relieved Sipowicz makes room in his closet for McDowell's things. Includes commercials and promos.
