ARLI$$ {ARLISS}: ALL THAT GLITTERS {SERIES FINALE} (TV)
Summary
The final episode of this comedy series about sports agent Arliss Michaels and his associates. It's October 9th, Arliss and Granite's birthday, and they celebrate it together. Arliss is still busy with his work, trying to get a contract for baseball player Curt Schilling and attempting to market a Swiss alcohol-filled candy in American stadiums. Granite ponders his life so far, wondering if he could have done anything differently. That night, Arliss is conducting business while watching Granite on television during his football game. Granite has a heart attack on camera and dies. Arliss attends his funeral and starts ignoring his calls, driving his car off in a random direction until he reaches a roadside gas station/motel. The innkeeper tries to speak to him, but Arliss is in a daze and so she recommends he spend the night. That night, Arliss is awakened by the sound of bagpipe music and follows it to discover an old gold prospector in the desert who introduces himself as Davey Owen Jones. He offers some cryptic phrases before walking off into the desert playing "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" on his bagpipes, which Arliss and Granite sang to each other at their birthday celebration. Meanwhile, Arliss's staff is becoming concerned that he hasn't called them yet. The maker of the Swiss chocolates is coming to visit soon, and the staff scrambles to locate Arliss. The next morning, Arliss is still at the motel and in a sort of stupor. He hears more bagpipe music and follows it into an old mine, where Davey is waiting for him. Davey takes him through the mine and manages to unearth a fragment of gold, which he causes to disappear. During a discussion, Arliss refers to himself as a "workaholic" and Davey remarks that his prospecting doesn't feel like work. The next day, Arliss checks out of his room and asks about Davey, but the innkeeper tells him Davey is just a legend. The story goes that Davey hunted day and night for gold but was caught in a cave-in. He was unearthed, still alive, on October 9th, 1955, the day Arliss and Granite were born, and has become the "patron saint of lost prospectors." Arliss drives back to Los Angeles as the Swiss businessman arrives. Desperate to stall him, Rita poses as Arliss and appears to complete the negotiations, but Kirby and Stanley arrive and manage to ruin the deal. The three of them realize how much they miss Arliss just as he returns. He manages to complete the Schilling deal he started earlier and settles into his old life, noting that Granite lived a full life doing what he loved and he hopes to do the same. The episode ends as Arliss notices Davey's gold fragment in his breast pocket.
