TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {DAVID STEINBERG; DIONNE WARWICK; DUB TAYLOR; BUDDY RICH} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. Carson's guests for this program are singer Dionne Warwick, comedian David Steinberg, jazz drummer Buddy Rich and character actor Dub Taylor.
In his opening monologue, Carson touches on the following topics, among others: the previous day's elections, and why they are "no fun anymore" because of early predictions from computers; the relatively low voter turnout and high numbers of Democratic winners, much to the annoyance of President Gerald Ford; important economic issues and the failed Proposition A concerning mass transit in California; California's new bachelor Governor Jerry Brown; Wilbur Mills' election to an impressive 19th term in the Arkansas House of Representatives; housewife Ella Grasso's big win in Connecticut, making her the first female U.S. governor not married to a former governor and the fourth woman overall, as clarified by bandleader Doc Severinsen. Carson also chats with announcer Ed McMahon about former madam Beverly Harrell's successful primary bid for a Nevada Assembly seat, and then reads out a series of uninspiring television summaries from TV Guide, to which he adds several creative new ideas.
The first guest, Warwick, takes the stage and sings "Then Came You," then chats with Carson about the recent birth of her son; her fondness for taking her children on the road with her when possible; her impressive record sales and how she chooses songs "by instinct"; her plans to finish her master's degree in music education; the recent opening of her upscale Beverly Hills boutique, at which shoppers are served cocktails; and her upcoming travels to the music-loving country of Brazil. Warwick then also performs "Sure Thing."
Steinberg joins Carson and discusses why political humor is less interesting now that Richard Nixon has left office; how the Watergate scandal "helped" Nixon brothers Donald and Edward; Wilbur Mills' underwhelming sex "scandal" involving Argentinian exotic dancer Fanne Foxe, which apparently did not hurt his political career; early rumors about the unpredictable 1976 presidential election; why the Comet Kohoutek, which made dramatic headlines in 1973, predicted the "fizzling" careers of many politicians, including Ford; his performances at universities and how college students have changed since the 1960s; and his dislike of the classic "what's your sign" question.
Next, Rich takes the stage and chats about his recent trip to Italy and London; his past trips to Japan and the Japanese people's slight confusion about the jazz genre; his upcoming album, "Transition"; his Doberman's adventures on a farm; and his perception of himself as "a very warm cat." Rich also introduces a singing quartet comprised of three daughters of famous musicians – and one wealthy benefactor – including his own daughter Cathy Rich, Stan Getz's daughter Beverly, and John Henry's daughter Michelle. The young women then sing "Hey Boy, Come and Get It."
Finally, Taylor joins Carson and comments on the origins of his nickname "Dub," shortened from the first letter of his given name, "Walter"; his signature hats; his many roles in a wide variety of Western films; his upcoming movie "Flash and the Firecat" (1975) and why he has performed few romantic leading-man parts; being recognized by fans who cannot quite identify him; and challenging incidents in which he had to quickly memorize dialogue, including song lyrics, for a brief film shoot. Taylor then performs a song on a "mouth organ." Includes commercials and promos.
