GILMORE GIRLS: THE LORELAIS' FIRST DAY AT YALE (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic series about Lorelai Gilmore, a thirty-something mother raising her teenage daughter Rory under the constant surveillance of her overbearing and very wealthy parents, Emily and Richard. In this episode, the Gilmore girls prepare for Rory’s start at Yale University, and Lorelai strives to preserve every landmark moment with photos. Luke lends Lorelai his truck for the moving process, but the plan hits a snag when Lorelai does not know how to drive stick. Luke attempts to teach her whilst dealing with problems of his own; namely, his impending divorce from Nicole, which turns out to be a far more complicated process than he thought, involving multiple lawyers, which annoys the corporate-hating diner owner to no end.
At Yale, Rory meets her freshman counselor, who tells her that she is allowed to bring her own mattress, as Lorelai urged previously, but must dispose of the Yale-issued one, which proves to be a problem. Rory takes the freshman tour and gets her student ID, complete with terrible photograph, and meets one of her suitemates, Tanna, an eccentric 16-year-old genius. As they explore the dorm, Lorelai notices other students’ belongings and decides that Rory needs more supplies, and returns to Stars Hollow for further shopping. She stops at Luke’s, where he is still arguing with the lawyers, who refuse to believe that he wants nothing from Nicole in the divorce, despite Lorelai’s assurance of Luke’s simplistic, hermit-like ways. Lorelai asks Luke to store the Yale mattress temporarily when she returns his truck, but he refuses, leading to a long and circular argument.
Back at the dorm, Rory meets another one of her suitemates—Paris, who has brought along her New Age-y life coach, Terrence, who helps her adjust and socialize more effectively. Paris reveals that she deliberately pulled strings to have them assigned as roommates, and Rory is stunned, as is Lorelai, who arrives shortly thereafter with Luke and the wayward mattress in tow. After helping her set up her room further, Lorelai finally leaves for good, but Rory texts her frantically a short time later, begging her to come back. When she does, Rory panics about the transition to college and the separation from her mother, and Lorelai agrees to stay the night in the dorm. They order a great deal of take-out food in order to evaluate the quality of the nearby restaurants (and attractiveness of the delivery staff) and end up throwing an impromptu party for the whole dorm, which greatly pleases the other students. In the morning, Lorelai departs again, leaving a reassured Rory with her fellow Yalies, who have already staked out the best coffee on campus. Lorelai returns the truck—and the mattress—to Luke, and then returns home to an empty house for the first time. Commercials deleted.
