BOSTON LEGAL: QUESTIONABLE CHARACTERS (TV)

Summary

One in this darkly comic series focusing on a firm of brilliant but emotionally-challenged attorneys in Boston. In this episode, a young man robs a convenience store and is shot in the chest by the owner. Elsewhere, Tara rushes into work after spending the night with Alan, making Lori suspicious. Lori then receives a call from a friend, Michael, who tells her that he has been shot and needs her assistance. She hurries to the hospital and demands to see him, ignoring A.D.A. Wills' arguments, and Michael swears to her that he was mugged on the street, though he is of course the robber. Elsewhere, Alan defends his client, Walter Mack, a landlord accused of endangering the tenants of his buildings, and Judge Brown is annoyed when A.D.A. Hayes agrees to accept a lesser charge and instead sentences Mack to stand outside of his buildings wearing a humiliating sign. Alan objects, but Mack agrees to the four-hour punishment. Lori informs Wills that Michael is a reliable informant and cannot be the robber, but Wills tells her that they will soon know the truth when the bullet is removed and tested. Alan tells Denny about Brown's ruling, and Denny reveals that the "raving loon" is fond of publicly shaming criminals.

Knowing that it will reveal his guilt, Michael decides not to have the bullet removed despite the danger to his life, and Lori is forced to defend his wishes. Paul assures her that she is technically following the law, but she wonders about the moral implications of her actions and recruits Tara's help. Mack begins his "sentence" and his tenants and neighbors immediately begin heckling him, and Wills argues in court that the bullet is necessary evidence and must be removed. Lori argues that Michael has the right to refuse an invasive surgical procedure, however, and the judge agrees. Alan is shocked to find Denny in jail, and he admits that he was arrested for solicitation after pursuing some strange sexual advice from his father. Alan employs an even stranger defense when he argues to a judge that Denny was experiencing a hometown "delirium" related to the Red Sox's World Series win, and the judge throws the case out. Mack is badly injured when the mob turns violent and is sent to the hospital, and Michael is relieved not to be arrested, though Lori tells him that she cares for him and dislikes his dangerous choice. Tara tells Alan about Michael's situation, and he suggests another "discretionary option."

Brown is angered to learn that Mack did not complete his punishment and orders him to finish out the four hours, and a furious Alan hauls the judge before a disciplinary panel. Paul quickly intervenes and tries to smooth things over, and Brown smugly orders Alan and Mack back to his courtroom. In response, Alan gives Paul his notice, and a quickly-deteriorating Michael searches for Lori, determined to avoid jail at all costs. Alan decides to exploit Brown's infamously dysfunctional relationship with his mother and assures the judge that he "has the power," and Brown relents and declares that Mack may go free if he makes the necessary repairs to his buildings. Tara takes Michael to Alan's "discreet" doctor, really a vet, and Denny asks Alan about his case, urging him to stay at the firm to annoy Paul. Tara reveals to Lori that Michael had the bullet removed after all, and Lori confronts Alan for interfering, saying that he "corrupted" Tara and is "lost" as a person. Denny ponders their uncomfortable status as "champions," and Alan then introduces him to a friend, Sarah, whose physical nature suits Denny's predilections perfectly. Includes commercials and promos.
