SEX AND THE CITY: CATCH-38 (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about Carrie Bradshaw, a single Manhattanite who writes a popular sex-advice column for a newspaper while dishing out dating advice and dirt with her three closest friends.

In this episode, Carrie is excited when "the Russian" gives her a key to his apartment and his security code, pleased that he is letting her into his life, unlike Big. She accompanies Samantha to a doctor's appointment, where Samantha learns that her surgery was successful, though she will likely still need a round of chemotherapy. She is insulted when the doctor suggests that not having children is part of the reason that she developed cancer, and storms out in search of a better physician. Miranda then reveals that she is going on "a little trip" with Steve, which the others realize is her honeymoon. Carrie and Charlotte offer to care for Brady. Samantha goes to a highly-rated female oncologist and drops some big names in an attempt to get an appointment, but the no-nonsense receptionist informs her that the schedule is all booked up. In the waiting room, however, she meets a nun in the same position, and she is relieved that "saints and sinners" alike can be affected with cancer.

Aleksandr invites Carrie and Brady over to his apartment, and she is moved to see him interacting sweetly with the baby. Miranda and Steve head up to an isolated mountain cabin, and Miranda is somewhat distressed to find that there is little to do there outside of the bedroom. Aleksandr reveals that he had a child long ago and has no desire for another, and Charlotte tells Carrie to end things with him. Carrie admits that she is unsure about motherhood, wondering if she should discuss the matter with him. She realizes that, at thirty-eight, she is running out of time. Miranda and Steve's romantic evening in the tub turns awkward, and she calls Carrie, desperately bored and tired of endless sex. Carrie writes her column, wondering if women pressure themselves too much with what they think they "should" want in life.

Samantha attends a party with Smith and finally admits her cancer diagnosis to him. Aleksandr explains to Carrie that his daughter is twenty-two and lives in Paris, and Carrie realizes that she may have missed her chance. Samantha reminds Carrie that she can have a fulfilling life with him without a baby; Carrie notes that it is too early in the relationship, but too late in life, to be having such a conversation with him. Charlotte is horrified when Brady spots her in an intimate moment with Harry, though Miranda is unworried. Miranda finally admits to Steve that she is sick of the honeymoon, but realizes that it is his vacation, too, and tries to compromise. Samantha discovers that the receptionist is a huge fan of Smith's and offers to introduce her if she gets her—and her nun friend—appointments with the doctor. Carrie tells Aleksandr that she wants to "really be with him" and he says that he feels the same, though states that he is too old to have another child. He tells her that she should do so if she wants, however, and she admits that she is still uncertain.
