SEX AND THE CITY: OUT OF THE FRYING PAN (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about Carrie Bradshaw, a single Manhattanite who writes a popular sex-advice column for a newspaper while dishing out dating advice and dirt with her three closest friends.
In this episode, Carrie enjoys a series of exotic meals with "the Russian," and is surprised when he opts to make dinner at her apartment. She dismisses her home as simplistic, but he says it is "warm and lovely," though they are both displeased with the arrival of a mouse. Later, Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte accompany Samantha to a chemotherapy session, and she breezily tells them about her plans to attend Smith's film premiere. Carrie tells Aleksandr about Samantha's upbeat attitude, but he tactlessly mentions a friend of his who died from cancer. Charlotte learns from her doctor that none of her eggs were viable, but determinedly plans to try IVF yet again. Steve and Miranda look for a new home, and though she is strongly opposed to leaving Manhattan, Steve convinces her to consider a house in Brooklyn. Carrie tries to discuss Aleksandr's insensitive comments about death and cancer with him, but he seems not to understand her point and they have their first fight.
Charlotte meets an adorable King Charles Spaniel while running in the park; Trudy, her owner, explains that she is a defective would-be show dog. Carrie tells Miranda about her fight with Aleksandr, and they reassure themselves that Samantha will be fine. Carrie agrees that Brooklyn is out of the question for Miranda, and she later writes her column, pondering the necessity of denial. Harry researches adoption and Charlotte runs into Trudy and her pet again, becoming emotional as she finally accepts her own "shortcomings." Samantha begins losing her hair during an intimate moment with Smith and Carrie accompanies her to a wig store. However, she grows annoyed at the fake-looking products and departs.
Carrie again tries to minimize her condition, but Samantha explains that she needs to be able to voice her fears. She eventually decides to shave her head, and though she tells Smith that he cannot handle the seriousness of it all, he shaves off his own glamorous hair in solidarity. Samantha attends his premiere in an outrageous pink wig. Miranda is at first unimpressed with the Brooklyn house, but Steve points out that it is the right choice for their family, and she begins to reconsider the borough. Trudy sends the King Charles to Charlotte as a present, saying that she can be a better owner to her, and a delighted Charlotte christens her new pet "Elizabeth Taylor." When Carrie encounters another mouse at home, she calls Aleksandr and finally explains how much she loves Samantha and that she is afraid to consider the idea of losing her. Aleksandr says that he wanted to prepare her for the worst in order to protect her feelings, as his own friend's death surprised him. Later, Miranda breaks the news to the girls about moving to Brooklyn as they all share a round of "Manhattans."
