SIX FEET UNDER: ALL ALONE (TV)

Summary

One in this series about the Fisher clan, a loving -- if dysfunctional -- family struggling to maintain a sense of normalcy in the face of the stressful day-to-day operations of the eccentric family business, a funeral home in Los Angeles. In this episode, a devastated Ruth dreams of Nate as Brenda struggles to tell Maya that her father is gone, though David throws himself into the funeral preparations to avoid his grief. When he retrieves Nate's body, he is unnerved to see that he has opted to donate his organs, and his fears about Jake begin to resurface. Bettina arrives to care for Ruth, who needles David about the details of Nate's death and states that they should delay the funeral, though David explains that Nate recently requested a "green" ceremony with no embalming. They find that his outdated pre-need requests cremation, however, and Brenda tearfully admits that she does not know what he truly wanted. Rico tries to explain that they have another pre-arranged funeral to host, though David tells him to change it, and Brenda is disgusted when Maggie arrives and apologizes for sleeping with Nate, informing her that Nate was not in love with her and that she "could have been anyone."

Bettina tries to comfort Ruth as she searches for meaning in Nate's passing, and David is upset when Nathaniel refers to Nate as "the one who mattered" and suggests that David was the least-loved Fisher child. Ruth and David argue bitterly as David prepares Nate's body, with David pointing out that she was not there at the time of his death, and Claire seeks refuge with Ted. Keith finds Roger fighting with an enraged young actor, Trevor, and Roger instructs him to drive Trevor to the airport, promising that he will help get Durrell and Anthony ready for the funeral at the same time. Margaret arrives to comfort her daughter and tries to explain the situation to Maya, adding that Billy is likely still in Dubai. Claire admits to Ted that she is dwelling on pointless fights that she had with Nate, distressed to realize that she never truly knew him well, and he confides in her about his own uneven relationships with his siblings. Rico panics about the fate of the business now that he and David are the only partners, and as Roger drops off David's sons, Keith is outraged to learn from Trevor that Roger filmed their one-time sexual encounter. Father Jack tries to provide insight to a furious Ruth, and Sarah and George soon arrive for the service.

Rico speaks sadly about Nate's ability to help the grieving, and though David talks about Nate's protectiveness and ability to "laugh at anything," he finds himself overwhelmed and unable to finish his eulogy. George takes over and speaks eloquently about Nate's "struggle to be a good man," and David apologizes to Ruth, who notes that they are remarkably alike. She invites George to the burial, and he mentions that he is no longer engaged, and Brenda drives alone to the site. Keith, Rico and George carry Nate's shrouded body to the gravesite, though Ruth finds David in his car, paralyzed with fear and still seeing visions of Jake. When he finally rejoins the family, Sarah reads a poem by Rumi as Claire recalls witnessing Nate's grief over the death of Kurt Cobain, and they grimly commit his body to the earth as Nate once did Lisa's. Alone in her car, Brenda argues with Nate about his adultery, though he counters that she will never treat Maya as her own and "destroys everything," as Joe once told her. Durrell and Anthony care for David as Keith angrily ends things with Roger, and Sarah tells Ruth that she had a dream about a seemingly peaceful Nate. Brenda leaves Maya with Ruth, saying that she herself will only make things worse for the little girl, and when she finds Billy waiting for her at home, she finally breaks down in his arms.
