SUPERNATURAL: BLOODY MARY (TV)
Summary
One in this series about the adventures of two Kansas brothers who travel the country hunting deadly urban legends and evil spirits. In this episode, a young girl in Toledo, Ohio, Lily Shoemaker, has a sleepover with her friends and is dared to say “Bloody Mary” three times into a mirror, as urban legend states that this will summon an angry spirit who scratches out the eyes of whomever says it. She does it and nothing seems to happen, but she does not notice a gaunt specter appearing in the mirrors around her house. Later that night, her older sister, Donna, returns home to find their father dead on the bathroom floor in a pool of blood.
Sam is still experiencing nightmares about Jessica’s death as he and Dean arrive in Toledo to investigate the man’s death. They bribe the coroner and inspect the body, learning that his eyes seemed to have “liquefied” and his skull was filled with blood, leading the doctors to suspect a bizarre stroke. They go to the Shoemakers’ home and talk to the daughters, and Lily tells them about playing Bloody Mary and blames herself for the death, but the brothers tell her it was not her fault. Privately, however, they agree that the legend could be true and wonder why the spirit attacked the father and not the person who said the incantation. They attempt to research the widespread legend, but have a hard time pinning down the exact truth of the story, as there are many versions. Elsewhere, Donna’s friends discuss Mr. Shoemaker’s bizarre death, and one girl, Jill, laughs at the suggestion that the Bloody Mary legend could be true, and says the name three times into a mirror. At first nothing happens, but then her reflection speaks to her and says “you killed that boy,” and she begins to bleed from the eyes and dies. Jill’s friend, Charlie, calls Sam and Dean in a panic and tells them what happened, and with her help they sneak into Jill’s house to investigate. Using a blacklight, they find a bloody handprint and a boy’s name, and they learn that the boy died in a hit-and-run accident, and that the description of the car matches Jill’s.
At the Shoemakers’ home, the brothers find another handprint and the name of Donna and Lily’s mother, and when they learn she died under mysterious circumstances, they begin to notice a pattern. They theorize that Bloody Mary attacks those who have a secret involving someone’s death, noting the lore about mirrors revealing hidden truths. Further research turns up a story of a woman named Mary Worthington who was murdered in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Dean and Sam go there and talk to the detective who worked on the case. He tells them that they had a suspect, but nothing ever panned out. He explains that she was cremated and the mirror was returned to her family many years ago. When they call the family, they learn that it was recently sold to an antiques dealer in Toledo, and they guess that wherever the mirror goes, Mary goes, and that destroying it may break the curse. Back in Ohio, at school, Charlie begs Donna to believe her about the legend, but Donna dismisses her and says the name three times in the mirror to prove her point. Charlie begins to see the ghost’s reflection in her classroom and reacts in terror, knowing that this means she is next.
Charlie calls Dean and Sam again and they hurry to her side, telling her to avoid all reflective surfaces. Dean asks about her secret, the one that would cause Mary to come after her, and she reveals that she had a boyfriend who committed suicide in distress over her leaving him. Later, Sam says that they should summon Mary by saying the incantation and then destroy her, and Dean realizes that he is still blaming himself for Jess’ death. He tells him that it was not his fault and won’t work anyway, as he knows all about it and it is not a secret, but Sam says there is more to the story that he does not know. They break into the antiques shop where the mirror is held, and, armed with a crowbar, Sam says “Bloody Mary” three times. Cops arrive outside and Dean goes to fend them off, leaving Sam alone. He starts to smash the mirrors around the room, but he begins to bleed from his eyes, and his reflection addresses him, saying that he truly is to blame for Jess’ death because he had nightmares about her demise for weeks prior to it happening, but did not try to save her. At the last second, Dean rushes in, smashes the mirror and helps Sam out of the shop. Mary crawls from the frame and attempts to attack them again, but Dean shows her her own reflection in another mirror, and it speaks to her and accuses her of all the murders she had committed, and she vanishes, the curse broken.
Sam and Dean visit Charlie again and assure her that it is over, and Sam encourages her to forgive herself about her boyfriend’s death. In the car, Dean asks Sam to explain the rest of the truth about Jess, but he declines, saying some things are private. As they drive along, he briefly sees an image of her, watching him sadly from the side of the road. Commercials deleted.
