ROD SERLING'S NIGHT GALLERY: WHISPER (TV)

Summary

One in this supernatural anthology series hosted by Rod Serling.

Charlie Evans is a young architect living in the country with his young wife Irene. They moved there from San Francisco at Irene’s insistence. Irene is particularly susceptible to possession by the spirits of the dead, and both seem to appreciate the diversion. However, recently Irene’s possessions have become troublesome, and Irene tries to tell the spirits of the dead that they are subject to her will, not vice-versa. Charlie tries to get sleeping pills for Irene, growing increasingly concerned about his wife’s well-being.

One night, over dinner, Irene gets up and suddenly runs out of the house. Charlie tracks her down beside a cairn and they open it. She is possessed by a woman who gives her what she believes is the body of her dead infant. As per her request, Charlie buries the “body” and returns to Irene, asking that she re-inhabit her body. Irene falls over, catatonic, and her distant voice screams that she cannot come back. Commercials deleted.
