ALIAS: PROPHET FIVE {FIFTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The fifth season premiere in this dramatic action series about CIA double agent Sydney Bristow and her adventures with her colleagues and her enemies. In this episode, Sydney awakens after the car accident to see an injured Vaughn being hauled off by paramedics – whom, she quickly realizes, are not paramedics at all. She fights them off and escapes into a field, and once at the hospital she is questioned by an Agent Gordon Dean, who cryptically asks about Vaughn's demeanor before the crash. Jack barges in and informs Sydney that Vaughn is suspected of being a double agent and that the crash may have been a planned extraction, though she refuses to believe it. Elsewhere, Vaughn is tortured by a man who calls him "Mr. Michaux" and demands to know the whereabouts of "Lehman," while back at the office Sydney questions Weiss about her first encounter with Vaughn back at SD-6, clearly having doubts about his loyalty. Dixon reassures her, pointing out that she too once falsely seemed to be a traitor, and Vaughn pretends to give in when his captors threaten Sydney, but he escapes them and manages to contact her by phone, promising to explain everything when they meet up.

Jack and Dean demand Vaughn's whereabouts from Sydney, but she gives them a false lead and goes to meet him on her own. He explains that his real name is Andre Michaux and that he has been working with Renée Rienne to investigate Prophet Five, a top-secret code-breaking project on which his father worked alongside Lehman back in the 1970s. Lehman explains that everyone involved with the project began dying mysterious deaths, prompting both Lehman and Vaughn's father to change their identities and disappear. Sydney and Vaughn head to Cape Town to acquire a certain book with more information about Prophet Five, but they are caught by security and forced to flee, and Sydney receives a very ill-timed phone call from her doctor informing her that she is pregnant. Jack visits Sloane in his cell, where he is desperately researching a cure for Nadia's seemingly irreversible condition, and Jack questions him about Vaughn's suspicious activity. Sloane claims that he was not involved, though gives Jack the tip about Rienne, explaining that she is a wanted killer.

Sydney and Vaughn discuss her pregnancy, and Vaughn admits that he is scared of bringing a child into their unpredictable and dangerous lives, but is excited for them to become parents all the same. He meets with Lehman to hand over the book, but Dean and his cohorts arrive on the scene and Sydney watches in horror as both Lehman and Vaughn are gunned down. At the hospital, Jack upbraids Sydney for going rogue to help Vaughn, but she reveals her pregnancy and he resolves to assist her in clearing her fiancé's name. Weiss and Marshall find that Dean is a "ghost," a former agent presumed dead, and Jack tasks them with investigating Prophet Five. Vaughn makes it through surgery and he and Sydney share a loving moment as they discuss baby names, but Vaughn suddenly flatlines and Sydney watches, devastated, as he passes away. Four months after the funeral, Sydney arrives in London and confronts a bartender who turns out to be Rienne, coolly informing her that she "knows everything." Includes commercials and promos.
