ACCORDING TO JIM: CHARITY BEGINS AT HEF'S (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about Jim, a construction business owner in Chicago, and his ongoing battles with his wife, three kids and in-laws.

Cheryl and Dana send out letters as part of a charity drive to help raise money for the homeless. Jim and Andy discover a letter from the Playboy Foundation addressed to Cheryl, discovering that she has been nominated as one of their spotlighted charity organizers and could enter an essay contest for a chance at winning a dinner at the Playboy Mansion. Jim deceives her about the circumstances of the contest, hoping to get her to enter to fulfill his lifelong dream to visit the Playboy Mansion. However, Cheryl does not wish to enter, as she does not seek public recognition for her charity work. Jim decides to write an essay for the contest in her name, hoping to win anyway. He and Andy devise the letter, trying to make it seem like Cheryl wrote it. Andy decides to help only if Jim offers to take him along to the Playboy Mansion. Their letter ends up winning the contest and they celebrate, although Cheryl soon finds out about it based on an article in the local newspaper. She confronts Jim about this and he tries to lie, but she and Dana soon extract the truth from him.

Cheryl decides to attend the dinner with Dana in order to accept her award. Undeterred, Jim and Andy attempt to sneak into the mansion anyway. They catch a glimpse of Cheryl hob-knobbing with Hugh Hefner, much to Jim’s displeasure. He and Andy disguise themselves as homeless people accompanying a special invitational group, and this proves to be successful. They take the opportunity to speak to Hefner personally, and Cheryl is surprised and angry to see them there. Cheryl is called up to read the essay Jim wrote for her. She finds herself touched by its contents, offering an honest description of her efforts to help the homeless and painting her as selfless and dedicated to her family. She thanks him for his efforts in spite of his selfish motivations, although he gets her to admit that she enjoys being acknowledged for her charity work. Includes commercials.
