GREY'S ANATOMY: TELL ME SWEET LITTLE LIES (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital. In this episode, Cristina tells Meredith that Burke "thinks" that she moved in with him, and though Meredith swears that she and Derek are "just friends," the romantic tension between them continues. George, fed up with Doc's destructive habits, threatens to move out if Meredith does not get rid of the dog, and he is deeply offended when she seems uncertain about her choice. A guitarist, Rick, is brought in after losing three fingers in an accident, and he claims that he does not smoke when Derek warns him that doing so could endanger the health of his repaired hand. Alex receives his exam results, and Richard tasks George with ousting Sophie, a vivacious elderly woman who has long overstayed her welcome at the hospital after an operation. Sophie explains that she is soon to move in with her daughter, and George finds that he cannot bring himself to order her out just yet. Alex is pleased to meet Yumi Miyazaki, a world-class competitive eater experiencing ongoing hiccups, and Addison orders Bailey to "take it easy" when she begins to suffer contraction-like pains.
Burke meets with a former patient, Naomi Cline, whose porcine heart valve is deteriorating quickly, and the woman's wildly happy demeanor causes Meredith to suspect that she is using drugs. Derek is frustrated with Cristina's blunt demeanor towards Rick, and Webber, who has also fallen for Sophie's charms, schemes with George to have her admitted to another department to extend her stay. Inspired by Yumi, Alex, Cristina and George conduct a hot dog-eating contest as Izzie attempts to write up a flyer stressing Doc's better qualities, and Richard finds that the nurses are growing exasperated with the doctors' "surgical arrogance" and their own overworked schedules. Bailey finds that Yumi has damaged her esophagus and must retire as a competitive eater, and Rick observes that Cristina does not believe that he will be able to quit smoking despite the considerable dangers. Sophie, back in the surgical unit, continues bonding with George, and Meredith, aware of Cristina's uncertainty, is uncomfortable when Burke invites her to have dinner at "their place." Derek confronts Cristina about her treatment of Rick, but she tells him that he is simply "the guy who screwed up her friend" and cannot judge her demeanor. She ends up assisting Rick in having one final smoke before surgery and then admits to Meredith that she is secretly keeping her apartment without Burke's knowledge, though points out that Meredith is also lying about her feelings for "McDreamy."
George tries to have Sophie admitted to the infectious diseases department, and when Naomi's husband confides to Meredith that his wife's endless cheerfulness is "exhausting," she orders more tests under Burke's name. Yumi, who left the hospital to participate in another competition against medical advice, returns with a fully-torn esophagus, and when Alex prepares to angrily confront her coach for the poor choice, Izzie observes that he is deflecting his anxiety about the test results. Burke, though annoyed by Meredith's trick, notices that Naomi's serotonin levels are extremely high and realizes that she has a rare lung tumor that causes, among other things, a false sense of euphoria. He then thanks Meredith for "convincing" Cristina to move in, much to her discomfort. George learns that Sophie fibbed about living with her daughter, and she admits that she is afraid of "becoming old" at a nursing home. He kindly assures her that she will do well there, and she urges him to "fight for what's his" in his own house. Richard learns that the nurses intend to strike in ten days' time, and Yumi's coach sadly apologizes for allowing her to ruin her career. Alex finally asks Izzie to open his test results, which reveal that he passed, and Derek assures Cristina that he can be nice to her friend without "being McDreamy." Bailey, experiencing pre-term labor, is forced to go on bed rest, though she sternly reminds her interns that she is still their formidable boss. George informs Meredith that he has "earned the right to be seen" and will not be kicked out of his own house, and Meredith, deciding to continue the "just-friends" façade, gives Doc to Derek and Addison.
