DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART, THE {SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of nightly comedy shows which take a skewered look at current events and feature field stories about any topic. This program, hosted by Jon Stewart, is broken down into different segments and features Arizona Senator John McCain.
Stewart discusses President George W. Bush's third State of the Union address of the previous night, touching upon such topics as his commentary on terrorist threats and "brutal" former Iraq President Saddam Hussein; an appearance by Iraq's governing council president Adnan Pachachi; Bush's comments on the Patriot Act, job growth, tax cuts and the need for drug testing in schools; Vice-President Dick Cheney's slouching posture behind Bush; and a letter from a 10- or possibly 2-year-old to the president.
"Senior Presidential Historian" Stephen Colbert then joins Stewart to discuss his disappointment with the speech; why Bush is an "ideas president" who offers little follow-through on his statements and promises; and why Colbert desires more believable lies from a politician.
Finally, McCain joins Stewart via satellite and comments on the speech, at which attendance was mandatory and which he found to be "too long"; the annoying experience of repeatedly getting to one's feet to applaud the president's comments; his sense that the Republican Party is spending money "like drunken sailors" on wasteful ideas like Mars travel and colonizing the moon (also proposed by President George H.W. Bush in 1988); whether he plans to run for president again; his memories of the "total incompetents" sent by the Daily Show to his unsuccessful 2000 campaign; and his plans to travel to New Hampshire in the near future. Stewart then closes the program with a "Moment of Zen." Commercials deleted.
