LOST: S.O.S. (TV)

Summary

One in this fantasy drama series about a group of plane-crash survivors forced to live with each other on a remote and mysterious island. Characters' past lives are told through frequent flashbacks. In this episode, Rose and Bernard organize the newly discovered Dharma food in their makeshift "kitchen" as Locke dutifully enters the numbers into the computer. Jack visits the defiantly silent "Henry Gale" and informs him that he intends to trade him in exchange for Walt, and though Henry informs him that the Others will never agree to the swap, Jack invites Kate to join him on his quest to find the sinister bearded man. In the past, Rose and Bernard meet on a snowy New York street and quickly fall in love, but when Bernard proposes to her beside Niagara Falls, she calmly informs him that she is dying of cancer. Crushed but undeterred, he repeats his offer, and she accepts.

Bernard decides that the 815 survivors have become too comfortable on the island and decides to create an enormous "SOS" sign for passing airplanes or satellites, though Mr. Eko and Charlie decline to assist, explaining that they are busy constructing a church. Locke, still obsessing over his momentary sighting of the blast door map, angrily demands to know if Henry pushed the button during the lockdown, to which a smug Henry makes no reply. During their honeymoon in Australia, Bernard reveals that he has made a sizable "donation" to get Rose a meeting with one Isaac of Uluru, an alleged faith healer, though an offended Rose tells him that she has made her peace with her fate. Back on the island, Sawyer also refuses to help with the "SOS" sign, and Rose tells a frustrated Bernard that he should simply "let things be," though he counters that it was his determination that apparently saved her life. Out on the jungle, Jack and Kate get themselves caught in one of Danielle's nets, and Bernard's volunteers gradually drop out, leaving him alone to build the sign himself.

Locke tells Rose that he is "done with the hatch" after his leg injury, though Rose cryptically observes that it will surely heal quickly. Back in Australia, Isaac explains to Rose that he can channel certain "energy" into others to heal them, but soon finds that he cannot help her, as it is "not the right place" for her. Unsurprised by this, Rose decides to tell Bernard that Isaac has "fixed" her after all. After escaping the net, Kate admits to Jack that she, Claire and Danielle found a separate hatch, a cleaned-out medical station that also contained strange disguises – and a fake beard. When Jack expresses frustration at her secrecy, she points out that he too has been concealing something, namely Henry. At "the line," Jack yells for the Others to emerge and bargain with him, though no one appears. Back on the beach, Rose reveals to Bernard that Isaac did not cure her cancer – but the island somehow did, as it did with Locke's paralysis. Shocked, Bernard decides to abandon the "SOS" sign, realizing that Rose is truly happy staying on the island indefinitely. Locke continues drawing the map symbols as the rest of the survivors relax into their "normal" daily lives, and Jack admits that he does not regret Kate's impulsive kiss – and they are both stunned by the sudden reappearance of a dazed Michael.
