VERY SOAPY CHRISTMAS, A (TV)
Summary
This televised special, hosted by "All My Children" star Cameron Mathison, offers a behind-the-scenes look at the recording of "A Holiday Affair," a Christmas-themed album featuring the singing talents of several popular soap opera actors.
The program begins as Mathison explains that record producer Marc "Doc" Dauer has twelve days in which to record the album, jetting back and forth from New York to Los Angeles to accommodate the thirteen stars' filming schedules. Dauer first records the instrumental tracks in L.A. and then heads to NYC, where Kassie DePaiva, who plays Blair Cramer on "One Life to Live," records her rendition of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and briefly shares some of her personal childhood memories of the holiday. Tika Sumpter, who plays Layla Williamson on "One Life to Live," sings "Even Santa Gets the Blues," drawing inspiration from blues singers of the 1930s. Scott Clifton, who plays Dillon Quartermaine on "General Hospital," records "Little Drummer Boy" and also throws in a Christopher Walken impression. Next, longtime singer Kathy Brier, who plays Marcie McBain on "One Life to Live," records her rendition of "River," and Renee Goldsberry, who plays Evangeline Williamson on "One Life to Live," sings a "reinvented" version of "The Christmas Song."
Jason Thompson, who portrays Dr. Patrick Drake on "General Hospital," confesses his nervousness about appearing on an album before singing "Winter Wonderland." Bobbie Eakes, who plays Krystal Chandler on "All My Children," records "Joy to the World," explaining that she started out as a singer and later turned to television acting. Jacob Young, who plays JR Chandler on "All My Children," sings "Silver Bells," and Eden Riegel, known for playing Bianca Montgomery on "All My Children," sings "Santa Baby" and comments on her longtime love of New York City Christmases. As the deadline draws closer, Ignacio Serricchio, who plays Diego Alcazar on "General Hospital," sings a Spanish-language version of "Silent Night" and discusses his childhood memories of Christmas in Argentina. Brier then "joins" him from New York for a duet of the song, and Dauer explains how he uses "recording magic" to harmonize their separate recordings. Kristen Anderson, who portrays Starr Manning on "One Life to Live," sings "Sleigh Ride," which Dauer notes is the most difficult song on the album. Vincent Irizarry, who plays Dr. David Hayward on "All My Children," sings "Please Come Home for Christmas" and discusses his training as a pianist at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
On the final day, Susan Lucci, well-known as Erica Kane on "All My Children," makes her recording debut in New York as she sings "I'll Be Home for Christmas," explaining that she feels particularly attached to the song, originally written during World War II, because of a recent visit with the veterans at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Finally, all thirteen stars collaborate on a version of "We Wish You a Merry Christmas." Mathison closes the program by explaining how fans can purchase the album online. Includes commercials and promos.
