GREY'S ANATOMY: MY FAVORITE MISTAKE (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital. In this episode, George and Izzie awaken from their night of heavy drinking — and lovemaking — though only Izzie seems to recall the details. At work, Webber frets about Colin Marlow's intimidating "10-year plan" for the hospital, and Callie begs a hungover George to feign total happiness in their marriage, as her stern father Carlos has come for a visit. Sloan gives Jane Doe the bizarre task of selecting a new face for herself and invites Meredith to help with the operation, and Callie introduces the interns to Cathy Rogerson, a patient with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), a condition that turns sufferers into "human statues," and her bossy daughter Nina. Cristina, sent to the clinic, stuns her diabetic patient Doug Kendry with the news that his foot must be amputated because of a bone infection, and Derek "hovers" over Meredith as she prepares for Jane Doe's bone graft.

Cristina tries to avoid Marlow, who correctly observes that Burke seems to be rushing her into the marriage, and Izzie struggles with her secret as Callie informs Cathy that she has serious internal bleeding. Cathy is reluctant to undergo surgery, as her FOP will likely kill her soon anyway, but Nina demands the treatment. Izzie blurts out a partial confession to Addison, who urges her to break off the illicit relationship, and Meredith tells Derek not to "protect" her when he worries that Mark is setting her up to fail with Jane Doe in order to boost his own status. Bailey impatiently informs Mark that she has only a "right-now plan," as she is busy with patients, and Alex creates personalities for Jane Doe's potential new looks, including one he calls "Ava." George tries to win over Carlos, who disapproves of Callie's Vegas marriage and demands a post-nup to protect her wealth — and George is shocked when he finally remembers his own actions of the previous night.

Cathy confides in Izzie about Nina, who has dedicated her entire young life to her mother's care, and Derek admits to Webber that he can't focus on the hospital plan, as he is still obsessing over Meredith "giving up" and nearly dying. Callie seems pleased when George "stands up" to Carlos, and when Meredith challenges Mark, he tells her to prove herself to be more than Derek and Webber's fragile image of her. Burke prepares for his board interview and pointedly tells Cristina that he wants to move only forward with his career and life, and as Mark and Meredith work on Jane Doe, a.k.a. "Ava," Cathy quickly worsens and dies on Callie's operating table. Izzie tries to comfort Nina, telling her that her mother wished her to move on and have a life of her own, and the other doctors are annoyed when Mark charms the board by stealing Bailey's "right-now plan" idea. A guilt-ridden George decides not to tell Callie about the dalliance with Izzie, and Cristina urges a depressed Doug to "follow the plan" for his health. Addison notices Alex's particular attention to Ava, who in turn notices Alex's flirtation with his boss, and Cristina finally tells Burke her wedding preferences as Meredith assures Derek that her "dead mommy's proud" of her accomplishment with Jane Doe. Elsewhere, George and Izzie grapple with their actions. Includes commercials and promos.
