CLOSER, THE: RUBY (TV)

Summary

One in this drama series about LAPD Deputy Police Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, a hard-nosed interrogator skillful at closing cases in the Priority Homicide Division. In this episode, police search a neighborhood to find Ruby Williams, a missing eight-year-old who disappeared from school at lunchtime. Brenda arrives on the scene and is brought up to speed by David before they speak with Ruby's parents. After receiving a lead on a van seen around Ruby's school, the girl's jacket is found in a nearby alley. Tracing the van's license plate, Brenda finds that it's owned by Roger Stimple, who's on parole for sexual battery. The suspect is subsequently arrested when canines detect Ruby's scent in his van. At headquarters, Roger taunts David about the sexual practices of young black girls, then says that he dropped Ruby off at Griffith Park. Brenda and David soon find Ruby's body in a ravine. Returning to the station, Brenda finds that David beat Roger to get the information. A horrified Brenda tells David that his professional future is in jeopardy and that Roger's admission won't be admissible for a jury. Later, Fritz tells Brenda that evidence on Roger's car links him to unsolved disappearances of two black girls. That night, Irene goes to Brenda's home and asks her to help David out of his dilemma. The next day, Commander Taylor mirrors the request. The commander then places Roger with other prisoners, who subsequently beat him up. When Roger asks to speak to Brenda, she pretends to sympathize with his plight. Roger admits to raping and killing Ruby, as well as the two other girls. When Irene thanks Brenda for her work, Brenda informs her that David's career is still in limbo. After Roger commits suicide in his cell, Brenda has the commander write up David's actions, leaving him with a ten-day suspension and a notation for excessive violence in his record. As an infuriated David leaves headquarters, he won't promise that there will be no repeat of his actions. Commercials deleted.
