BOSTON LEGAL: RESCUE ME (TV)

Summary

One in this darkly comic series focusing on a firm of brilliant but emotionally-challenged attorneys in Boston. In this episode, Clarence is tasked with helping one Maureen Janely, who wishes to sue her pastor/former lover, Reverend Kurt Joyner, for dumping her, and the "oversexed" Andrea Michele returns to ask Carl's help in suing an odd company that transforms cremains into diamonds, explaining that her mother's ashes were turned into a cubic zirconium stone instead. Katie meets with handsome Leo Morris, who has been accused of fraud after selling his life insurance and then discovering a life-prolonging new AIDS drug, meaning that the insurance company must now pay for his medications for many more years. Whitney assists Carolyn Joseph, who is suing her late daughter's high school for overworking the teen to the point of profound sleep deprivation, leading to a fatal car crash. Denny and Alan are busy with their Coast Guard "training," and Carl reflects on the firm's typically inane behavior and again tells Shirley that despite their compatibility, they both "deserve better."

Joyner awkwardly tells Maureen that their affair was nothing more than lust, and Carolyn emotionally describes the "frenzy" of her daughter Samantha's schedule, including AP classes and many extracurriculars, regretting that she did not tell her to slow things down. Leo accuses his insurance company of breach of contract for refusing to pay for his drugs, though they point out that he presented himself as being mere months from death when he sold his policy. Andrea refuses to settle over the diamond "glitch," and Lorraine considers a new angle when Maureen states that Joyner's behavior has caused her to lose her faith in God. Samantha's principal explains how modern-day students are taught to simply memorize facts for tests in order to get into "trophy colleges" rather than to truly learn, suggesting that there is no way of evading the highly competitive academic system. Leo is charmed when Katie coolly shames the insurance company into settling by reminding them of their corrupt policies based in outdated views of HIV/AIDS, though Katie is hesitant to flirt with a client.

Lorraine declares that Maureen can actually sue the church, as Joyner is their "agent" and preached about a connection between God and love, but Maureen later reunites with her married lover and happily drops the case, much to the lawyers' frustration. Judge Brown, naturally, disapproves of Andrea's case, but Carl makes an eloquent argument about ruthless exploitation in the death industry, as in the pricey nature of funerals. Whitney tells the jury a number of alarming statistics about teens' rates of stress, depression and anxiety, stating that they are significantly harmed by America's "nation of winners" attitude. Shirley gently warns Katie against falling in love with Leo, and Judge Webb, moved by Carolyn's story, allows her case against the high school to move forward. Shirley encourages Carl to consider Andrea's eager propositions, assuring him that she wishes him to be happy, and Alan's fear of water rears its ugly head as he is tasked with "saving" Denny from a swimming pool as a preliminary test for the Coast Guard. Denny, unaccustomed to failure, is embarrassed by their fiasco, but the two agree to hug it out and enjoy a sleepover.
