ACCORDING TO JIM: JIM'S BIRTHDAY {SEASON SIX FINALE} (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about Jim, a construction business owner in Chicago, and his ongoing battles with his wife, three kids and in-laws.
Jim’s friends and family throw him a surprise birthday party. He takes Cheryl aside and demands that she ask everyone to leave, as he despises birthday parties, even his own. Jim reluctantly goes along with the proceedings, and Dana tricks Andy into arriving in a ridiculous costume. Jim attempts to convince Andy to climb a telephone pole and cut power to his house, believing that his costume will keep him insulated from electric shock. Andy climbs up and awaits the proper time while Jim runs back inside. He stalls Cheryl while Andy disables the transformer, although he topples off the telephone pole when he is attacked by a raccoon. The power goes out across the neighborhood and Cheryl instantly suspects that Jim is responsible, although he denies this. Jim attempts to get everyone to leave, but Chryl is determined to continue the party despite the lack of power.
Cheryl has everyone at the party give individual toasts to Jim one by one. Eventually the power comes back on, but Jim is nowhere to be found. She finds him asleep in their bed and becomes furious with him. She demands to know why he holds so much antipathy for surprise birthday parties, and he reveals that his problems stem from his thirteenth birthday, when everyone seemingly forgot about him. He recounts a surprise party being sprung on him just as he was masturbating to his mother’s bra catalog, an incident which he feels was highly traumatic. Unbeknownst to Jim, Dana’s baby monitor picks up the entire conversation, meaning that all the party guests now know about it. They break into uproarious laughter, and Jim realizes what has happened. Cheryl rushes downstairs, promising to resolve the situation. Jim attempts to flee the house but Cheryl and the assembled guests stop him, determined to help him get over the incident once and for all. With their help he realizes that the incident was not particularly unusual and, while embarrassing, was somewhat amusing in hindsight. To cheer him up, Cheryl plays a DVD she made of photographs and videos of Jim throughout his life. He is touched by this gesture and thanks Cheryl and everyone else for their support. Includes commercials.
