LOST: GREATEST HITS (TV)
Summary
One in this fantasy drama series about a group of plane-crash survivors forced to live with each other on a remote and mysterious island. Characters' past lives are told through frequent flashbacks. In this episode, Karl dashes for the outrigger and heads to the main island as Jack informs the group that he and Danielle have been working together to collect dynamite from the Black Rock and that on the following day, when the Others come to kidnap the pregnant women, as Juliet has said, they will "blow them all to Hell." In the past, Charlie and the other Drive Shaft members are elated when they hear "You All Everybody" on the radio for the first time, giving them hope that they will truly become rock stars. Back on the island, Naomi tells Charlie that Drive Shaft has experienced a renaissance since his supposed death and released a "greatest hits" album, though Charlie seems to note with irony that he will soon truly be dead, according to Desmond's foresight. Juliet explains that Ben is jamming all outgoing radio frequencies from the island from an underwater Dharma station known as "the Looking-Glass," meaning that they cannot radio Naomi's boat to rescue them until it is switched off. Desmond regretfully tells Charlie that he has seen a flash of Claire and Aaron boarding a helicopter and finally escaping the island – but only if Charlie does in fact die.
In the past, young Charlie overcomes his fears and learns to swim with the help of his dad, and Desmond explains that Charlie must flip a switch in a certain hatch to ensure the others' escape, after which he will drown. When Juliet explains that the Looking-Glass is apparently flooded and the mission is likely a one-way trip, Charlie sees his opportunity and offers to swim down to un-jam the frequency, but Jack refuses to allow it. Elsewhere, Jin questions Sun about Juliet's comments, and Sun happily reveals that she has seen their healthy daughter on the ultrasound. Karl suddenly arrives on the island in a panic and, once Sawyer assures them all that he is trustworthy, tells them that the Others are arriving not tomorrow, but within mere hours. Six hours previously, Ben returns to the camp after his "accident" with Locke and commands Ryan to take his men and go after the pregnant women immediately, claiming that Jacob has ordered him to speed up the plan. He ruthlessly states that they should take all of the women – and kill the men – if Juliet has not yet marked the tents, and Alex sprints off to alert Karl, telling him that he owes Kate and Sawyer the benefit of a warning in return for saving his life.
Jack quickly rethinks the plan and orders everyone to the radio tower, determined that they should escape via Naomi's boat, and instructs Charlie to swim to the Looking-Glass after all. In the past, at Christmas, Liam gives Charlie the "DS" ring, explaining that he is more deserving of the family heirloom, as he is far more likely than Liam himself is to clean up his life and have a family of his own. In the present, Charlie bids a loving farewell to his honorary "wife and son," Claire and Aaron, assuring him that he will rejoin them soon, though knowing that he will likely never see them again. In the past, Charlie saves a woman, who is in fact Sayid's love Nadia, from a mugger, and she gratefully tells him that he is a "hero." Rose frets about leaving Bernard in a dangerous situation, and Sayid sternly informs Jack that he himself will lead the resistance against the Others' attack while Jack leads everyone else to the radio tower and, hopefully, to safety. Charlie quickly dissuades Hurley from coming along to the Looking-Glass and says good-bye to his close friend, and Claire unknowingly leaves Charlie's ring behind in Aaron's bassinet as she heads for the tower. On the night of the crash, Charlie finds a pregnant Claire on the beach and introduces himself, assuring her that they will soon be rescued, and as he and Desmond follow the beach cable out to sea, he explains that in preparing for death, he has written a message to Claire in the form of a list of his five best memories, or "greatest hits," culminating with the night on which they met. Desmond declares that he will take Charlie's place after all, but Charlie knocks him out with an oar and leaves the list with him before diving into the water and making the dangerously long swim down to the Looking-Glass. He is elated when he surfaces at the station – but Bonnie and Greta suddenly appear and hold him at gunpoint. Includes commercials and promos.
