TRAVELER: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} {SNEAK PREVIEW} (TV)

Summary

The premiere in this short-lived dramatic suspense series about two Yale students framed – seemingly by their best friend -- for a terrorist bombing. In this episode, Jay Burchell and Tyler Fog flee from the authorities, shocked to see themselves mentioned on the news. A day earlier, Jay, Tyler and their pal Will Traveler three friends depart from Yale University on a Kerouac-inspired road trip, first stopping in New York City. The wealthy Tyler puts them up at an expensive hotel, and when he has doubts about leaving his girlfriend Kim behind for the open road, Will urges him to "understand the country" before embarking on his law career. They head for an art museum, the Drexler, and decide to pull a prank in which they videotape themselves roller-blading through the halls. Once Tyler and Jay are outside, however, they receive a call from Will who states that he is "sorry he had to do this" before a bomb destroys most of the museum. Jay and Tyler rush back to the hotel and find Will's belongings gone, and Tyler calls his wealthy father Carlton for advice. Jay talks to Special Agent in Charge Fred Chambers, swearing that they are innocent of any involvement and asking if Will has been found alive, but Carlton reveals that, according to the stock market, someone was aware of the bombing ahead of time and is now trying to frame them for it.

Jay and Tyler resolve to find Will and clear their names, and the hotel porter helps them to escape the cops. Chambers and Agents Marlow and Borjes profile the three men, finding that Jay's father was court-martialed for war crimes. Carlton orders the boys to leave the city, though Jay remains determined to find Will and they decide to split up and, hopefully, reconvene in an hour's time. Jay surprises Kim in her apartment and feverishly searches for photos of Will, but upon finding that he has carefully avoided cameras for years, begins to suspect that he is in on the plot after all. The FBI agents search the bombing site and find what appears to be Will's body, and Jay bids a sad farewell to Kim as he vows to undercover the truth about his mysterious friend. The agents track down Tyler via his father's ATM card and, after a chase, Marlow and Borjes prepare to arrest him at gunpoint. Jay, however, watching from nearby, calls Marlow and claims to have a second bomb, demanding Tyler's release in exchange for its location. She reveals that Will is dead, but he refuses to budge on his offer. The asset concludes after this point.

In the remaining portion of the episode, Chambers tells Marlow to release Tyler and Jay, as he has sent in undercover agents, and Jay claims that the second bomb is on the Brooklyn Bridge. Jay and Tyler briefly reunite, but are soon captured by the other agents. In the police van, they wonder if Will truly did conspire against them, but the van is suddenly struck and the agents within killed – by none other than the "porter" from the hotel. He orders them to trust only each other before vanishing, and as Tyler contacts his father for an update, Jay recalls his "fateful" first meeting with his two roommates and friends. Carlton tells them how to make their way out of the city and safely to the Fog home – but then tells an unseen figure that he has followed orders and arranged for the boys to come. Includes commercials and promos.
