GREY'S ANATOMY: KUNG FU FIGHTING (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital. In this episode, Cristina "diagnoses" a frustrated Meredith with severe abandonment issues, while elsewhere Richard invites an equally lovelorn Derek to a "gentleman's evening" to get their minds off of their troubles. Izzie and George attempt to navigate their new relationship by planning a romantic evening, and Dr. Hahn, the "new Burke," officially arrives at Seattle Grace. Callie is annoyed by two new patients, Helena and Jackie, who are both furiously clinging onto a wedding dress in the hopes of winning a $100,000 wedding package, though Cristina is thrilled by the arrival of Rick Jacobs, a skydiver who somehow survived a 12,000-foot freefall. Mark offers to "torture" George a bit for Callie's sake, and Cristina tries to "trade" Rick, who seems to have surprisingly few injuries, for Izzie's heart patient Mr. Arnold, a shy birdwatcher, arguing that Izzie is not "hardcore" enough for cardio.
Everyone is stunned to find that Rick has suffered nothing more than a damaged appendix, and Alex invites a nervous Lexie to join him on ortho service as Mark forces George to be Jackie's "proxy," meaning that he must stand around holding the dress. Hahn and Izzie find that Arnold is allergic to anesthesia, leaving him no treatment options for his fatal heart blockage, and Jackie refuses to forgo the contest in order to get surgery on her dislocated shoulder. The interns gleefully watch Rick's skydiving video, in which he frantically declares his love for Sally, his instructor, as he plummets to Earth, and Cristina gets a brilliant idea for performing Arnold's operation while he's awake — but while Hahn likes the suggestion, she brings Izzie, not Cristina, onto the daring surgery. Jackie swiftly changes her mind when Lexie hints that she could be a hunchback by her wedding, and Hahn wonders about Mark and Derek's closeness when they mention the "gentleman's evening."
George tries to persuade Izzie that she is indeed hardcore enough for cardio, and Hahn hits back at Richard's "old boys' club" sensibilities when he objects to Arnold's risky operation. Meredith reflects on her sense of clarity since her drowning incident, and Helena collapses as she tells George about her desire to fulfill her mother's hopes for a magical wedding. Callie loses patience with Jackie's obsession over the contest, and Cristina assures a worried Derek that she's "taking care of" Meredith where he can't. Arnold panics during his conscious surgery, but Izzie calms him by telling him to describe all of the gallery members as different birds. Callie tells George that she's "letting go," and George assures Helena that he "let go" of the dress first, meaning that she has won the $100,000. Meredith urges Rick to tell Sally the truth, as his sense of near-death mental clarity will soon fade, and Hahn crashes the gentleman's evening as Alex bluntly tells Lexie that he's not interested in a serious relationship. George and Izzie, both exhausted from their work, postpone their romantic night yet again, and Meredith, realizing that she feels "safe" with Derek despite their unbalanced relationship, is disturbed to find that Lexie has accepted Alex's offer of "just sex."
