PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: MONK: 100 EPISODES AND COUNTING {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented by The Paley Center for Media. Held at The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles, this evening celebrates the one hundredth episode of "Monk," a series about Sherlockian detective Adrian Monk, a man who develops an obsessive-compulsive disorder after his wife's murder. Rene Reyes (producer of public programs, The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles) offers opening remarks before introducing the evening’s moderator, Ray Richmond (columnist, Hollywood Reporter). Richmond sets up the episode "Mr. Monk’s Other Brother," which is then screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 101457).
After the screening, Richmond introduces the panelists: executive producers David Hoberman and Randy Zisk; executive producer and cast member Tony Shalhoub (Adrian Monk); and cast members Ted Levine (Capt. Leland Stottlemeyer), and Jason Gray-Stanford (Lt. Randall Disher). Traylor Howard (Natalie Teeger) was scheduled to participate but was unable to attend.
The panelists discuss topics which include: the show's upcoming final season; the writers plans to resolve Monk’s personal story; how Shalhoub’s perfectionism parallels the habits of the title character; if Shalhoub was the first choice for the title role; Gray-Stanford's "learning process" while working on "Monk"; the effects of the departure of cast member Bitty Schram (Sharona Fleming) and her replacement by Howard; why Shalhoub and Gray-Stanford remain challenged by their roles despite the show’s long run; reactions to the show from audience members with obsessive-compulsive disorder; how Hoberman’s real-life phobias inspired the title character's quirks; the factors that contributed to choosing the show’s setting; Shalhoub's insistence in early episodes to nix Monk’s self-deprecation; "extreme" fan responses to the show; and how "Monk" compares to Shalhoub’s work on the television sitcom "Wings."
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: if the writers begin each script with ideas for the show's central murder; whether the title character will ever recover from his various neuroses; if the panelists have made future plans to fill the void caused by the conclusion of "Monk"; the level of improvisation on the show; Gray-Stanford's work in the Clint Eastwood-directed film "Flags of Our Fathers"; why Gena Rowlands and John Turturro are among the favorite guest stars that have appeared on "Monk"; and how the characters have evolved during the show's run.
