LINABAG TI NAPALABAS {MEMORIES OF THE PAST}
{KOSOFSKY ETHNIC RADIO COLLECTION --
FILIPINO/ILOCANO} (RADIO)

Summary

One in this daily series in which Byrne Mu–oz, known as Madong Byrnie, plays music and reads stories that share memories. In this installment, between snatches of nostalgic music, the host reads a letter from a Honolulu man named Makar who has worked hard and made good. Makar begins by expressing his appreciation for the program, adding that he hopes his letter will touch listeners. He explains that at a young age he went to work as a servant to a prominent Filipino family with connections in Hawaii. His father arranged the employment, which took place at the rice mill of a family friend -- a friend who had often helped Makar's family financially. Makar also stayed often at the home of his employer, doing errands for the family. When his employer went to Hawaii, he placed the household and business in charge of Makar as his own children showed scant interest in the enterprise. Makar writes that he spent very little time with his own family during this period as he always felt the need to get back to work. He recalls a day when one of the daughters of the house asked him to take her shopping and then to a movie. Despite his demurral, she sat next to him in the theater and talked to him. Afterwards, she told him that she found him trustworthy -- and that she loved him. He took her home immediately, and her mother confronted the pair. To his surprise, she expressed her approval. He was soon shown a letter from the young woman's father that also expressed his approval of the match. They married and moved to Hawaii in 1984. Makar concludes by rejoicing in the fact that the family for whom he worked could see beyond his lack of material goods to appreciate in his good character. He asks Madong Byrnie to play the song "Happy" in dedication to his wife. After playing the song, the host draws lessons from the story and promises to return with another story on Monday. Includes commercials.
