MUSIC MAKERS, THE: THE INK SPOTS (RADIO)

Summary

One in this series of programs featuring interviews with musicians and selections from their recorded work. On this edition, host Skitch Henderson welcomes Johnny Smith of the legendary Ink Spots, a group which reached the height of its popularity in the 1940s with a long string of hit songs. In interview segments, interspersed with recordings, Smith comments on the following topics, among others: the formation and early history of the group; the strong influence of Bill Kenny's high-tenor vocals on the Ink Spots sound, which was initially more R&B-oriented; how the songs they recorded were chosen; their days on the tour circuit with Jimmie Lunceford and His Orchestra; the dissolution of the original Ink Spots into two separate groups, both called the Ink Spots; Kenny's purchase of the Ink Spots name from Ivory "Deek" Watson; and their relationship with Decca Records. The following hit recordings are played in their entirety: "If I Didn't Care," "When the Swallows Come Back to Capistrano," "Java Jive," "Maybe," "We Three (My Echo, My Shadow and Me," "I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire," "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," "I'll Get By," "The Gypsy," "To Each His Own," "Whispering Grass (Don't Tell the Trees)" and "Do I Worry?" Includes commercials and promos. This program is followed by several promotional spots, delivered by Skitch Henderson, for this edition of "The Music Makers."
