EUROPEANS' REACTION TO HITLER'S REPLY TO ROOSEVELT'S PEACE PROPOSAL; CHURCHILL'S REACTION TO HITLER'S REPLY TO ROOSEVELT'S PEACE PROPOSAL (RADIO)

Summary

The first of two programs on this tape. A summation is presented of German chancellor Adolf Hitler's rejection of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt's plea for peace on April 28, 1939. Hitler's speech, addressed to the Reichstag, denied that Germany desires war, or that the country has designs on its "weak neighbors." Hitler then made a twenty-one point analysis of the president's message, countering many of Roosevelt's sentiments. H.R. Baukhage, NBC's Washington D.C. commentator, checks in at international locales to get world reaction to Hitler's address. First, comments from Senator Arthur Capper of Kansas and Senator Ernest Lundeen in Minnesota are read, after which countries are listed which are deemed potential victims of Hitler's regime. Comments are subsequently heard from Max Jordan, NBC's correspondent in Berlin, Germany; Warren Irvin, NBC's correspondent in Geneva, Switzerland; Tadeusz Lutalofski, Chicago Daily News correspondent in Warsaw, Poland; David Wills, Christian Science Monitor correspondent in London, England; William Bird, New York Sun correspondent in Paris, France; and Givereau Quivarer, a newsman in Brussels, Belgium. Subjects include whether Germany is willing to declare war if it can't take over neighboring countries "peacefully"; whether Roosevelt's message has "awoken" other democratic nations; if Germany still considers itself a victim of the Treaty of Versailles; Hitler's use of sarcasm in addressing Roosevelt; if Russia can be brought into the non-aggression pact; and if Europe is ready to take part in a second world war. Baukhage concludes with a summary of his guests' main points. (This broadcast originally aired on the BBC.)

The second of two programs on this tape. British statesman Winston S. Churchill, former war minister and current House of Commons member, delivers a speech from Chartwell, his residence in Westerham in Kent, England, on Hitler's reaction to President Franklin D. Roosevelt's peace proposal. Churchill addresses the following topics, among others: whether Hitler intends to invade Poland; how Europe's peace-seeking powers should react; Germany's negative reaction to the Treaty of Versailles; and "the sovereign hope of the British, French, and American democracies for what will happen in the end." (This speech originally aired on the BBC.)
