Summary
Continued from T:05944. Chapter six of this nine-part mini-series based on Irwin Shaw's best-selling novel that follows the divergent paths of the two Jordache brothers -- Rudy, the educated and ambitious one, who triumphs over his impoverished background, and Tom, the unruly rebel -- from 1945 to the 1960s. As this chapter opens, Rudy and Julie spend the day together, and although Rudy is anxious for them to marry, she is hesitant to make a commitment. Returning home that evening, she finds her ex-husband Willie there, broke, and pleading to come back to her. Meanwhile, a friend of his former trainer Smitty gives Tom the opportunity to leave the country and escape the mob by working on a merchant steamer. Needing money to make the journey, Tom visits his mother and they have a short-lived reunion after many years. Later that evening, Rudy brings Julie home to see his mother. A devout Catholic, Mary Jordache is not happy that Rudy is seeing a divorced woman, but swallows her pride when he threatens to cut off her allowance. Afterwards, Mr. Calderwood calls Rudy to his office and accuses him of seducing his daughter Ginny which leads to a tremendous argument. The chapter closes as Rudy and Julie learn shocking news about Willie. Commercials deleted.
