RICH MAN, POOR MAN {CHAPTER 5 OF 9} (TV)
Summary
Continued from T:05945. Chapter five of this nine-part mini-series based on Irwin Shaw's best-selling novel that follows the divergent paths of the two Jordache brothers -- Rudy, the educated and ambitious one, who triumphs over his impoverished background, and Tom, the unruly rebel -- from 1945 to the 1960s. This chapter begins with Tom returning from an unsuccessful attempt to find Teresa and his son. His old boxing trainer Smitty hires him to be a sparring partner for Joey Quales, a champion boxer controlled by a crime syndicate. Tom and Joey's wife Linda are attracted to each other immediately and begin a secret affair. In the wake of McCarthyism, Rudy's friendship is put to the test when Bill Denton, his old economics professor, asks him to testify before the tenure committee that he is not a Communist. Rudy also has problems with Ginny, Mr. Calderwood's daughter, who wants their friendship to develop into something more. However, after attending a party where Julie tells Rudy that she and Willie are divorced, Ginny flies into a jealous rage and vows to make Rudy pay for using her to move up in her father's business. Eventually, Quales learns about his wife's affair with Tom and confronts him. Tom beats him up badly in the ensuing fight, but as a result he must leave the country to escape the mob's retaliation for his treatment of their star boxer. Commercials deleted. Continues with T:05940.
