20/20 {CATHERINE "KITTY" GENOVESE MURDER} (TV)

Summary

A segment from one in this series of news magazine programs. In this segment, reporter Sylvia Chase examines the 1964 murder of twenty-eight-year-old Catherine "Kitty" Genovese. Chase begins by reviewing the details of the murder and revisiting the scene of the crime with Martin Gansberg, the reporter who originally covered the story for the "New York Times." Gansberg recalls how Winston Moseley stabbed Genovese repeatedly while numerous neighbors witnessed the crime and did nothing to help the victim. Chase then interviews Winston Moseley, who remembers very little of the details of the evening in question, but reveals a new motive for the murder. Mrs. Moseley, Winston's mother, is interviewed and asserts her son's innocence. Chase also interviews a number of anonymous residents of the Kew Gardens, Queens, neighborhood where the crime took place. Commercials deleted.

Cataloging of this program was made possible by The Marc Haas and Helen Hotze Haas Foundation, 1998.
