RIPPING YARNS: ROGER OF THE RAJ (TV)
Summary
One in this series of British comedies, each featuring a different Edwardian-era misadventure. This episode begins with Roger Bartlesham leaving the stuffy breakfast table of his aristocratic parents to learn about social revolution from his tutor, Hopper. Later on, the family hunt grouse, and Roger leaves in disgust due to his mother's callous attitude after accidentally shooting a servant. World War I erupts, and the family is sent to India to play croquet and give dinner parties as part of the war effort. During one of these dinners, various officers from Lord Bartlesham's regiment commit social blunders and are obligated, as gentlemen, to shoot themselves as punishment. Roger sees romance in a forbidden career in "trade," and convinces his love, Miranda, to run away with him and open a chemists' sundries shop. However, Hopper wants him to lead a revolution of Lord Bartlesham's regiment. The chaos resulting from the uprising offers the perfect opportunity for Roger and Miranda to escape and follow their dream.
