Summary
One in this series of documentaries on the Olympic Games. This program covers the experiences of Olympic athletes who almost won a gold metal. Highlights of this program include footage of the following controversial events in Olympic history, among others: Ralph Metcalf's silver medal finishes in the 100-meter dash and in the 200-meter dash at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles; the United States men's team's gold medal finish in the 400-meter relay at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin; the 5000-meter run at the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles in which gold medal winner Lauri Lehtinen was accused of illegally blocking one of his competitors; the women's 400-meter relay at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin in which the German team dropped the baton; the women's 400-meter relay at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki in which the Australian team dropped the baton; the men's 400-meter relay at the 1948 Olympic Games in London in which the United States team was disqualified; the men's 100-meter swimming race at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome in which United States athlete Lance Larsen lost his gold medal to Devitt of Australia; the men's 400-meter relay at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome in which the United States team was disqualified from the race; and the final basketball game of the 1972 Olympics in Munich in which the Soviet Union defeated the United States after twice replaying the last three seconds of the game. Also included are interviews with the athletes who were part of these controversial races and comments by Bud Greenspan and Cappy Petrash Greenspan about the importance of winning.
