WARNER BROTHERS PRESENTS: CHEYENNE: THE DARK RIDER {LAST BROADCAST OF WARNER BROS. PRESENTS} (TV)

Summary

One in this anthology series hosted by Gig Young, which features three rotating sagas based on the classic films "Casablanca," "Cheyenne," and "King's Row," as well as occasional assorted dramas. This program is an episode of "Cheyenne," a western drama about a lone drifter named Cheyenne Bodie. In this episode Cheyenne is scammed by a beautiful con-artist named Samantha and goes after her when she skips town. When he catches up to her, he finds that she is leading a cattle drive with her friend and partner Lew Lattimer. She says she cannot pay Cheyenne the money she owes him -- because she has sunken all her money into the drive -- but offers him a job as trail boss. Still stinging over being taken, and sensing her inexperience, he accepts -- for an astronomical fee. Lattimer, the current trail boss, is furious when he learns of this deal. When he refuses to pay such a price, Cheyenne makes a deal: he will work for them as a low-wage driver, but if his services as trail boss become necessary, he will be paid an even higher price than he originally requested. Cheyenne joins the drive, which comes to include an odd-lot of characters including a phony English nobleman and a mission priest. Later, a young member of the drive turns up dead, having been knifed in the night. Accusations fly among the principles -- who believe the killer wanted a bigger piece of the pie -- and level-headed Cheyenne tries to keep them calm. To add to their difficulties, the unseasoned Lattimer leads them in the wrong direction with the cattle in dire need of water. Lattimer finally concedes and lets Cheyenne take over as trail boss, but the group's problems are far from over when another of them is found murdered in the night. Following "Cheyenne" is a segment promoting the new Warner Bros. feature film, "Toward the Unknown." Gig Young interviews the film's star, William Holden, who sits in the cockpit of a Bell X-2 rocket aircraft and discusses his role as an Air Force test pilot; and Young and Holden talk with a real Air Force test pilot. Includes commercials and an extended promo for upcoming episodes of "Conflict," hosted by Clint Walker.

(This is the last broadcast of the umbrella series, "Warner Brothers Presents." "King's Row" and "Casablanca" had been cancelled earlier in 1956. "Cheyenne" continued as a series until 1963, rotating with other programs such as "Conflict" and "Sugarfoot.")
