DICK POWELL'S ZANE GREY THEATRE: MISSION (TV)

Summary

One in this western anthology series hosted by Dick Powell, based on the works of Zane Grey. Powell makes introductory comments about black soldiers' service in the U.S. cavalry.

In this episode, the men of the 10th Cavalry, an all-black unit known as "The Buffalo Soldiers," has been chosen to transport a Comanche chieftain back to the fort where he will sign a peace treaty with the U.S. government. The men are told by their commander, Sergeant Morgan, that the chief is to be treated as a government guest. Young Corporal Smith (Davis), who once witnessed a Comanche attack on women and children, struggles with his feelings of hatred towards the chief. When the troopers are ambushed by Apaches on their way to to the fort, and Sergeant Morgan is mortally wounded, Smith must take over as commander. The Apaches, who far outnumber the troopers, announce that they will let the 10th go without harm if the unit surrenders the Comanche. Smith is torn between his urge to give up the chief and his desire to complete his mission honorably He comes up with a startling solution. Commercials deleted.
