READING RAINBOW: PAUL BUNYAN {THIRD SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of educational children's programs that encourages children to read, hosted by LeVar Burton. This episode features the American tall tale of legendary logger Paul Bunyan, retold and illustrated by Steven Kellogg. At 156 pounds, Paul Bunyan is the largest and smartest baby ever born in the state of Maine, and as a lad, he is able to tear down trees with his bare hands. At seventeen, Paul heads West with his blue ox, Babe, and becomes famous for clearing the American frontier of trees so new settlers can build homes. Host LeVar Burton explains the history of logging, the importance of conservation, and the prevention of forest fires. The program includes film footage of the Forest Service in Maine battling a ten-acre blaze and footage of various lumberjack contests. Also featured is a brief cartoon about other tall tales, including Johnny Appleseed and John Henry. (This program is closed-captioned.)
