Summary
One in this series of programs demonstrating home repairs. In this installment, host Bob Vila takes a trip to Seattle, Washington, to examine the workmanship on houseboats, which have become popular in the Pacific Northwest. Prior to this trip, Vila meets with master carpenter Norm Abrams to scout their progress on a house they've been building after six weeks of work. Next, Vila talks with Alan Grainger, architect of a newly-renovated Seattle hotel. Topics discussed include the feasibility of the renovations, and the advantages and disadvantages of renovating a building surrounded by historical landmarks. Then, Vila speaks with houseboat architect Lasse Jaakola about the following topics, among others: normal homeowning worries that are nonexistent with houseboats; the reason the houses float; limitations on houseboat sizes; designing the homes to withstand strong gusts of wind; operating the plumbing; the number of anchors the homes have; the strong docks that must secure the homes and protect against the water; changes in the houseboat lifestyle over the years; heating the homes; calculating weight changes as people furnish the houses; and the cost of a standard houseboat.
