WHITE SHADOW, THE: JUST ONE OF THE BOYS (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dramas about Ken Reeves, a former professional basketball player, who begins a new life as the basketball coach of Carver High, an inner-city high school in Los Angeles. In this episode, Reeves must deal with the consequences when he learns that a new member of the team is gay. When Reeves substitutes for the home economics teacher, he becomes the target of wisecracks by a new student, Raymond Collins. But Reeves invites him to basketball practice after learning that Collins played ball at his former school. A routine background check reveals that Collins was transferred to Carver because he used to get into fights. Vice Principal Buchanan explains to Reeves that the fights started because Collins is gay and he was endlessly taunted about his homosexuality, and Reeves now wonders whether or not he should tell the team. Later, during a fight at a playground, the losers reveal Collins's secret in an unsportsmanlike manner. Buchanan is angry with Reeves because now the entire school knows about Collins, and the team is uninterested in Reeves's speech about tolerance. Since his team refuses to listen, Reeves speaks with Collins's former coach, his parents, and Collins himself. However, Collins has already decided that his best recourse is to drop out of Carver and move to a place where nobody knows him. Buchanan steps in to console Collins and try to change his attitude about leaving school. Commercials deleted.
