CHINA BEACH: VETS (TV)

Summary

One in this drama series set during the Vietnam War, which focuses on the women stationed at China Beach, a combined U.S. Armed Forces hospital and USO recreational facility located near the South China Sea. This special documentary episode features interviews with women who served as nurses or entertainers during the war. Clips from past episodes are interspersed among the interviews to illustrate the topics discussed. Topics covered in the profiles of veterans include: the pressures and varying degrees of discrimination that women experienced in the male-dominated environment, as discussed by 7th Surgical Hospital Nurse Nellie Harness Coakley and Pleiku 71st Evac Nurse Jan Wyatt; disparities between the officers on base and the soldiers in fire camps, as discussed by USO tour participant Sharyn Hillyer Simons; the challenge of remaining upbeat while being confronted by shocking tragedy; the comfort and hope that service women provided for homesick, wounded, and dying soldiers; and the intense bond that formed between Americans in the service.
