ABC NEWS NIGHTLINE: CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS (TV)
Summary
One in this series of nightly news programs. In this program, Forrest Sawyer, substituting for Ted Koppel, examines revelations about the Cuban missile crisis, following a special conference in Moscow, at which Americans, Soviets, and Cubans shared vital information about the crisis for the first time. Included is a report by correspondent Pierre Salinger, who served as President John F. Kennedy's press secretary. Salinger shares his insights about the events in October 1962 that almost led to global nuclear war. Also included are discussions among Sawyer and guest experts who were involved in the crisis, including Salinger; Sergei Khrushchev, son of former Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev; former U.S. Defense Secretary Robert McNamara; ABC News reporter John Scali, who served as intermediary between top Soviet and U.S. officials during the crisis; and Sergo Mikoyan, Soviet editor of Latinskaya Amerika. Highlights include a review of the events during and leading up to the crisis, as well as a review of the Bay of Pigs and "Operation Mongoose," the CIA's bungled plan to assassinate Fidel Castro; a discussion of newly declassified documents; an examination of Soviet and American actions during the critical days in October, focusing on the decision of the 27th; speculations about what might have occurred had Kennedy lived longer and Khrushchev remained in power, or, had the U.S. invaded Cuba. Footage includes various speeches by President Kennedy and Cuban leader Fidel Castro; a press conference with Salinger; Khrushchev's speechwriter Fyodor Burlatsky; and excerpts from "News of the Day" newsreels, "Rebels Invade Castro's Cuba," with commentary by Michael Fitzmaurice, and "The Cuban Crisis: U.S. Answers Offensive Challenge," with commentary by Peter Roberts. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements.
Cataloging of this program was made possible by a grant from the Times Mirror Foundation.
