ALVIN AILEY: MEMORIES AND VISIONS (TV)
Summary
This program presents the work of choreographer Alvin Ailey of the Alvin Ailey City Center Dance Theater. Ailey introduces himself, discusses the inspiration for each piece, and explains the role his background has played in the creation of his dances. The performances featured in this program include "Blues Suite," a dance based on Ailey's childhood in Texas; "The Lark Ascending," a dance based on the song by Ralph Vaughn Williams; "Cry," a performance piece choreographed to the song, "Right On, Be Free," by Chuck Griffin, and based on the black experience in America; "Mary Lou's Mass," a dance based on the composition by Mary Lou Williams, who discusses with Ailey the influence of jazz in her work; "A Song For You," based on the song by Leon Russell; "Hidden Rites," a performance about the battle for equality of the sexes; and "Revelations," a presentation of dance pieces choreographed to gospel music.
