SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE {BUCK HENRY, SUN RA} {THIRD SEASON FINALE} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of live, late-night comedy/variety programs featuring topical satire. Actor Buck Henry hosts this program, with Sun Ra as guest performer. After an announcement that "The Boy in the Plastic Pants Suit" won't be seen, the opening skit features former President Richard Nixon (Dan Aykroyd) telling how everyone hates him and won't buy his autobiography, a book for which he now suggests alternate uses. In the monologue, Henry talks about why he's continually asked to host the final episode of an "S.N.L." season. Meanwhile, a crawl plays beneath him, revealing the producers' feedback to Henry's perceptions about his "classy" status in Hollywood. Sketches include: nerdy Lisa Loopner and Todd DiLamuca prepare for their prom date with the help of their clueless parents; "Samurai T.V. Repairman" wherein John Belushi's samurai character fixes a broken television set with an unusual set of tools; a 2003 B.C. meeting of the Sodom Chamber of Commerce wherein the town's bad reputation is addressed; Jane Curtin and Aykroyd host "Weekend Update," which features Laraine Newman's report on dog-based developments in the David Berkowitz "Son of Sam" trial, "stargazer" Bill Murray's movie review of "The Greek Tycoon," Aykroyd's commentary on the drinking habits of First Ladies, and a "Point/Counterpoint" featuring Aykroyd and Curtin on the commercialization of jogging; the boys at the Olympia Cafe continue gruffly serving up "cheezborgers" and Pepsis; "Mr. Mike's Least-Loved Music," wherein Michael O'Donoghue sings about baby ghouls as Newman interprets lyrics for the deaf; "More Insects to Worry About" wherein an entomologist (Henry) discusses insects that could threaten the human species, such as the "mucus-flinging faggot-maggot"; a television show taping, "Animal Abuse," wherein "stunt puppy" Tippy is employed to take a beating in place of canine star Sparky; "Bad Conceptual Art" featuring a "stunningly pointless" excerpt from "Pavlov Video Chicken One," the performance of a woman (Gilda Radner) dancing like a chicken for 378 consecutive hours; and "The Franken and Davis Show" wherein Al Franken and Tom Davis bicker over their sexual orientation. Sun Ra and his Jazz from Another Planet "Arkestra" perform "Space is the Place." Includes commercials.
